S&W SHEILD 9MM
« on: November 28, 2020, 03:32:39 PM »
I've got a wife with a S&W Shield in 9mm with the two standard magazines (7&8) with 50 rounds of 9mm Ball Ammo. Lightly used with love.  Never carried.  Lived in a night stand for 6 or 7 years.
She has decided she hates and wants to sell.

I've got a best friend that is looking to buy a gun and is interested.

What is a good price / going rate / fair deal for that?  I'm seeing prices on line from $250 to $799.99.  He's a good friend so I'm going to take care of him but not sure where that starts at in this market?

Edit to add - When I was boxing it up in the original box and paperwork it came with, I found my original purchase receipt.  On 03/18/2014 I paid $475.37 after Tax

I never sell anything more than i paid. Pre covid or during covid.

The choice is really up to you

The closest 1 i seen in a store was a SW ez 9. It was 525.00 brand new. Covid pricing and NOT under blue label program. 😔

Are you in dire need of cash?
How many rounds through it? Lightly used could be in the eye of the beholder.
6 to 7 years.. in a nightstand. You think it served its purpose?
How often did you do maintenance on it?
Last time you shot it? Not like this really matters.
Any add ons?

I once sold a gen 4 g17 with bout 300 rounds through it. Sold it to my friend for 380 bucks. Picked it up brand new for 480. But thats just me.

If you go on gunbroker.com and create an account, you can use the "Advanced" search feature to view completed auctions.  That is more realistic than looking at current listing prices that may never sell.

From a quick look, I'm approximating between $325 to $400 for the gun with just original parts and accessories.

The price for 50 rds of ammo can vary by brand, weight and quality.  You might actually get more for the ammo here selling apart from the pistol.  However, including hard-to-find ammo with the gun might help your friend, too.  Check the going price per round of 9mm in the forum's classifieds and multiply by 50.  Add that -- or something close -- to the total price.

If you have a holster or any other accessories, combine everything together if he wants it all, priced according to condition and current market prices.   A bundle discount would be appropriate as a single transaction saves you time and hassle meeting up to sell individually.

On a side note, if you don't expect to conceal carry anytime soon, don't buy the wife another subcompact.  It's much easier to handle a nice 1911 or Sig P226.  They weigh slightly more, but from a performance perspective, small handguns require more grip strength and are simply harder to shoot well IMHO.  It's a relative thing -- not saying you can't shoot small guns well, but larger pistols are easier to shoot well for most people.

I'd also check out the Sig P320. You can get it in a variety of calibers and sizes, it can use your 9mm ammo if you choose that model, and it's much lighter than a P226 by virtue of being a polymer frame.  I love my P320.  I bought it as a full size, and then bought the compact frame conversion kit for carry.  It's probably my favorite pistol, a toss-up with my Sig MK25 P226.

Larger guns usually provide more firepower via larger mags.  Granted, 7-8 rds is only 2-3 off the HI max allowed, but that can be the difference between enough and "wish I had one more round."

This assumes your wife even wants another gun and doesn't hate the Shield for personal reasons, of course.

What a G.  :shaka: 2018- early 2020 they were going for ~300-400 Out the door online (shipping & ffl included). 50 rounds ball point maybe $15. Everything being equal, best friend price for me would be ~$300 - $350 for everything. Great guns hold their value.

The shield has been my most reliable handgun period, no malfs after couple thousand mixed rds... you friend is buying an awesome gun!

That's wild.  I just checked my receipt out of curiosity.

I purchased mine from OGC on 03/06/2014 -- just 12 days earlier then you.

Price was $399.00 plus $18.80 GET = $417.80 out the door.

I guess I got mine during one of their Twitter sales.

Mine has the manual safety.  At that time, there were "no thumb safety" models, too.

BTW, the NEW IN BOX MSRP on the S&W site is $385, FWIW.

Or just wait til this whole pandemic passes before purchasing a new gun. Unless you find decent priced guns.

Selling an old gun for cheaper than you got it for. Just to buy a new covid-inflated price handgun/or whatever gun doesnt really make sense. I only bought 1 new gun this year. And the price had not changed due to covid. If it were inflated, i wouldve passed 100 percent.

Even though the wife doesnt like like the shield anymore, im sure she atleast knows how to use it. Afterall it was in her or his nightstand.

I was gonna put 350-375 price range in my earlier post lol. But with held until he said if it had trigger work or aftermarket sights. Dunno if it comes with nightsights or not. My mp40 didnt.

+1 on the p226
+1 on the p320
+0 on the 1911 lol.

P365 is a great little gun.   Might be a good replacement.
