If you go on gunbroker.com and create an account, you can use the "Advanced" search feature to view completed auctions. That is more realistic than looking at current listing prices that may never sell.
From a quick look, I'm approximating between $325 to $400 for the gun with just original parts and accessories.
The price for 50 rds of ammo can vary by brand, weight and quality. You might actually get more for the ammo here selling apart from the pistol. However, including hard-to-find ammo with the gun might help your friend, too. Check the going price per round of 9mm in the forum's classifieds and multiply by 50. Add that -- or something close -- to the total price.
If you have a holster or any other accessories, combine everything together if he wants it all, priced according to condition and current market prices. A bundle discount would be appropriate as a single transaction saves you time and hassle meeting up to sell individually.
On a side note, if you don't expect to conceal carry anytime soon, don't buy the wife another subcompact. It's much easier to handle a nice 1911 or Sig P226. They weigh slightly more, but from a performance perspective, small handguns require more grip strength and are simply harder to shoot well IMHO. It's a relative thing -- not saying you can't shoot small guns well, but larger pistols are easier to shoot well for most people.
I'd also check out the Sig P320. You can get it in a variety of calibers and sizes, it can use your 9mm ammo if you choose that model, and it's much lighter than a P226 by virtue of being a polymer frame. I love my P320. I bought it as a full size, and then bought the compact frame conversion kit for carry. It's probably my favorite pistol, a toss-up with my Sig MK25 P226.
Larger guns usually provide more firepower via larger mags. Granted, 7-8 rds is only 2-3 off the HI max allowed, but that can be the difference between enough and "wish I had one more round."
This assumes your wife even wants another gun and doesn't hate the Shield for personal reasons, of course.
Or, just get a shotgun! --
