Dillon super swage not working right

Aloha reloaders! So I have a Dillon super swagger that I think isn’t working properly. I have a bunch of crimped 223/556 brass that I need to go through. What’s funny is that even though it has a crimp I still seem to be able to prime it without having to swage. There’s a few where I have to push a little harder but I haven’t come across one that won’t seat. However I did notice a few times that a little brass shaving (I assume it’s the lip from the crimp) will come off and so I figured I would buy a swager just to be safe.

So my first problem seems to be that the swager isn’t actually swaging the pocket. No matter how deep I set the swaging rod I can still see the crimp in the brass. I have the swage rod pretty deep to where it actually takes some force to bring the handle back to take out the brass. I don’t think I should need this much force to swage the pocket. My swager is also not bolted to anything I’m just putting one and on the swager to hold it down and the other hand pulls the handle. What could be wrong here? Is there something wrong with the swage rod?

You need to bolt it down. Depending on the brass, it may take some force to swage the crimp out. You may also need to adjust the rod on the brass brand and/or lot. It is OK for the handle to cam over slightly like a press. The handle should extend below the table edge if you bolt it down.

I use the Dillon SS600 a lot.  When you swage a pocket, the visible crimp ring doesn't disappear as the tapered swaging rod only pushes the top edge of the primer pocket out a little.  I prime on a reloading press and I can easily feel when I need to swage a pocket by the amount of resistance from the primer being seated.  Sometimes you don't need to swage, other times you do - even with brass from the same lot.  Even when swaging, I feel how much resistance I get when moving the handle - I try to swage just a little so that the pocket stays tight.

I picked up a used Dillon swage...it wasn’t working right. I determined that it was worn...contacted Dillion and said it was damaged. They replaced it and everything is good
