357 and 44 wadcutters
« on: December 06, 2021, 08:39:38 AM »
first reloads for 357 with  WC.  button nose flat bottom 153 grain, and DEWC 148 grains. both lead.  using titegroup.  the vid is with the 153 grain button nose flat bottom with 5 grains of titegroup
did not use a chrono.  but that's on my christmas list.  so just used my palm chrono.  :D
on the hodgdon website for 148 grain bullets, the charge goes from 2.9-3.3 grains. on another bullet website goes up to 5 grains of titiegroup.  I'm using the 148 grain bullet data bc they are very close 148 grain and 153 grain.  also I cant find any data with 153 grain bullet
at 2.9 grains, felt really weak, weaker than 38sp, at 3.2 grains felt like an average 38sp.  at 5 grains felt more like 38sp+p.  not the most scientific data, but felt well below a 357mag.  (I know, gotta get that chrono soon)
I will go back and work it up from the 3.2 grains soon

this is with 5 grains of titegroup with 153 grain button nose flat bottom wadcutters that i got from WGS that i lubed myself.  you can see recoil very manageable

Never pushed WC’s very hard. Basically they are designed to cut a clean hole in paper. So target loads are what I load them to. I keep them around 750fps. Never thought of pushing them up to close to 38SPL +P speeds. I have just started casting my own WC’s. After I cast a batch I’ll coat them and load some up. And I might load a few up to around 1050fps and see how they do. I am of the old school that says if you don’t have HP’s for self defense, load up some wadcutters. I wouldn’t want to get hit by one.

I really need to get a chrono soon.  I'm really just guessing at the velocities using the load data as reference.  that load with 5 grains titegroup was getting 1100fps according to the data I was using.  but maybe that's a little too much for my purposes: accurate, not too much recoil so can get quick follow up shots, but still has enough energy to stop a threat. I'm thinking somewhere around 950-1000 fps is what I'm looking for

I didn’t want to say it but I use 5.0gr of Titegroup to make my 38SPL +P loads. At 750fps Trail Boss works great. If you are going to ring steel then maybe a hotter load is worthwhile. I mostly punch paper so my needs are practice with live fire while drawing from a holster and follow up shots. Those easy shooting loads make it easy to practice with so when I practice with heavier loads the transition is smooth.

Are the WC’s you using hardcast? Otherwise at the speeds you are pushing them you might see some leading.

yes hard cast
the 357 is BHN 12, the 44 is BHN 15

I've read that the BNH 12 can be loaded to 1100fps, and the BHN 15 to 1300fps
but I plan to load the 357 to 950-1000 for 357, and around 1000 for the 44

Just for sharing, I have a target load for my 627 that shoots fairly soft but is the most accurate load I have found for it since I know you have one as well. I am using 125gr JHP from Montana Gold Bullets over 5.0gr of Titegroup in a Starline 357 case. Gets to about 1050fps. Shoots a ragged hole at 25yds rested. I have a friend over there with a 627 who also used HP-38 with that bullet with equal results.

thanks, Inspector.
I actually have all those components.  125 grain montana gold bullets, HP-38, and titegroup.  i'll have to try that recipe. my 627 is the short barrel version, 2".  yours is the longer barrel?

Oh, sorry I thought your had the same barrel. I have the 5” slab sided barrel. Hopefully that load will do you well.  :shaka:
