Forget about all the crimes he committed....How did he get a rifle says Doogie Chin.

One of Kaneholani’s theft convictions was a felony.

“You cannot own or possess a firearm if you have a felony conviction. So, one of the questions is going to be, how did he obtain this rifle?” said attorney Megan Kau.

Maui Police Chief John Pelletier told Hawaii News Now Friday that O was shot in the chest area. The department believes Kaneholani used a rifle.

“I think one of the biggest concerns that people have these days is how people are able to obtain firearms in the first place,” said legal expert Doug Chin.

The comments on social media have many asking stuff like "how come she wasn't wearing a vest?".

For those who don't know, standard issue for uniform officers, their vest are not rifle caliber rated, but pistol.  In the early 00's, their vest weren't even rated to stop a 357 or 44 caliber round.

This is understandable as many don't/shouldn't know about body armor anyways.

"Police said around 8:30 p.m., a caller reported that an unknown individual had trespassed onto their property and fired a weapon at them."

It is profoundly regrettable that the caller was not someone equipped to return fire and eliminate this threat, or at least cause it to flee the scene out of fear for its life.

This action is 100% defensible when you are fired upon.

Now we will be paying to keep this piece of trash alive for the rest of it's life (criminals are sacred), while we meaninglessly loose someones wife / daughter, and fine peace officer.

I'll just say it: You are doing the criminal a favor if you take him out BEFORE he completes his mission of death to others, in that things will go a bit easier for him on judgement day without the crime of murder on his soul.

It's so sad that this scumbag is still alive and our officer is not.
I wouldn't be surprised if prison karma bites this dude hard.

Hawaii: The state whose ruling class takes great pride in BOTH

outlawing the death penalty for murder, and

being the first state to uphold capital punishment for the accident of not quite being born yet.

Thus, this ruling class is doomed, as all other such peoples before them throughout human history
