Pidgin english
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:29:52 AM »
This thought was prompted by the post of the guy thinking of moving to Hawaii from the mainland.

http://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=6274.0

I didn't realize how important pidgin english is in being readily accepted by all groups in Hawaii. The above post points out that our culture is Local, not necessarily ethinicity based. It also references racism in Hawaii.

As a born and raised Haole boy that grew up here, I learned to speak pidgin fluently.

It's funny because now I am accepted anywhere.  When showing up at appointments, I actually had customers tell me they wanted to meet with the guy they spoke to on the phone. Which was me. Once I reply in authentic pidgin, they let me in with open arms.

I tell people from the mainland it's not racism, it's localism. We are different than the other states and we guard our lifestyle and culture so we don't lose it.  I tell them Haole is not a deregatory term unless it has Fkn in front of it.

Pidgin lets us all talk to each other on equal ground.  I want my kids to be bi-lingual: pidgin and proper english, but I hope the Pidgin english and culture never disappears.

Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

I find it interesting that people from Hawaii think they have a monopoly on pidgin.  There are many places in the US where a pidgin is spoken, and in all of those places, whether or not you speak it determines how you fit into the society.  Hawaii has many things special about it; that isn't one of them.
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Thanks Aiea78. Right back at ya and you know it.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. I didn't say anyhting about a monopoly on pidgin. I just like that there are pidgin cultures that are unique and hope they don't die out. Ours in particular because I live in it.

My family loves the TV shows Swamp People and Duck Dynasty.  Reflections of pidgin cultures. IMO.  I also think the pidgin cultures are the most embracing to all genuine people and the most leary of fast talkers.

I was just making a point that race is really a non-issue in Hawaii. It's culture.

The culture is the reason why I chose to live here. In tough times people with strong culture are much more resilient. It's scary to see what's going down in those whitebread walmart towns back on the mainland. Once their economies are shot it's like they turn into cannibal cave people.
