Trying to buy local
« on: July 10, 2013, 10:38:46 PM »
I recently was shopping for barrel work and while I tried to "buy local" it was easier and cheaper for me to ship it to ADCO Firearms on the mainland.
Why?
- it was cheaper even with shipping and insurance
- fast turnaround: barrel threading and bead blast I had it back in 7 days and that was including the 4th of July. A local smith said he was going to take about 30-45 days for the job and wanted 1/2" of barrel just in case he messed up the threads  ???
- easier, I went to ADCO's website and purchased the service online, printed it out, packaged my barrel, paid postage online at www.usps.com, printed label and dropped off package at post office near work
- ADCO's detailed explanation of its services on their website and presence on boards showed me that they are not only smiths but knew what they were doing; they explained things on their website and are active on other boards. They are also multi-disciplined shooters. I had confidence in their work.

In addition, I've used White Oak Precision and Compass Lake before largely in part because of they are accomplished shooters and have a solid reputation for good work.
While I know many may argue that I should've been patient and paid more to "buy local" and support vendors in Hawaii; the cost, service and satisfaction doesn't warrant a decision to stay local. I can only guess that it is very expensive to maintain a shop here but if you have the desire these are some points that I take into consideration: confidence in your work and overall service. Trying to contact some local smiths was rather challenging.
Don't get me wrong, I do buy other products and may spend a little more to support retailers here.

You're the customer and you get to choose who you want to go for certain things. No shame in that.

This is completely true, not really the same thing but..
I got a new bike frame and needed a shop to put the headset in as I don't have the tools (could have just asked to borrow their tools..) anyways I ask them if I can give them my frame and if they can throw it in while I am at school (2hrs) and they laugh and say no..and that it will take at least a week to get done..so I left, went to a different bike shop and had it done within five minutes.

You gotta have options.

This tends to be a really touch subject...

If sales and services has anything to do with machining and / or raw materials, it's almost never going to be cheap.
Most of us bust our asses paying the day-to-day bills and just living day-to-day.
Price is a concern.
Time is also a concern.
If you can balance the two, then it's usually a satisfactory transaction.
I've been to many local shops / stores (not necessary gun related) that didn't want to deal with the "small sh*t" - how the hell do you expect to build your reputation???
This is when the law of economics kicks in - supply and demand.

Bottom line, as long as you're happy with your purchase and service, that's all that matters.

LOL, I have that exact problem.  Which shop did you get it done at?  Bike Factory Waipio said they could but I'd prefer someone in town.

Lol yeah it was BF Waipio, I mean it was around (like the 18th, that was their excuse for why it would take a week) Christmas but it's like a 5 min job! Ended up going to BikeWorx in Mililani.

True, but it was a zero stack headset and was a bit sketched out on it. Plus when a frame cost 3k (got it for 1700) I didn't want to risk it!
It's the only thing I got to LBS for now days.

You should've supported your FFL because without them how would you get your firearms?

How much did you pay for the work?
How much was shipping both ways?
