Giffords/Kelly almost-free book offer... drain their bank account
« on: September 08, 2014, 09:20:04 AM »
I follow the "Americans for Responsible Solutions" organization via an email subscription... and they send something every few days, usually asking for money. This is the group founded by brain-injured former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly. They are (ostensibly) gun-owning gun grabbers who favor "common sense gun safety legislation" such as "universal background checks", banning "assault weapons", etc. I got this email this morning from them, entitled "This might not work"... and I'm hoping so. If enough people were to give them one dollar or less for the book, I'm assuming it would cost them money to send these books to us, therefore a net loss in funds their organization could have used to attempt to legislate our firearms away from us. You might be able to enter an amount of less than one dollar, but I just made it simple and gave them a buck. I'm assuming if this catches on (as did the MSNBC Kroger CCW poll with over 24,000 (85%) votes FOR CCW/open carry in grocery stores), that we could put a real dent in their bottom line. I also assume that if it did catch on, that they would institute a minimum donation, because they really couldn't sustain the losses if, say, the 5 million NRA members all gave a buck for the book. I did receive a "thank you" email shortly after I made the one dollar "donation" thanking me for my "generous" donation.

This might not work

We had a crazy idea, and want to know if you'll take us up on it.

Gabby and I wrote a new book that's coming out at the end of this month. It's called Enough, and it's about why we are working to keep America safe from gun violence.

I'll tell you more about the book itself in a second, but here's our offer.

Contribute ANY amount you think is fair to support our work at Americans for Responsible Solutions, and we'll send you a copy of our book before it's even in stores.

http://action.americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/enough_book

Donate anything, get our new book

We know that some people might contribute less than the book costs, and that's OK.

But we hope that you'll consider contributing more if you can afford it, because we need to both pay for the cost of the book, and then use the rest to fight the gun lobby in November.

When you read our book, you'll get both an intimate look at the lives of Gabby and me after the Tucson shooting. You'll go inside the halls of Congress and the White House the day the Senate failed to pass expanded background checks. And you'll get our take on where the gun lobby went so wrong by fighting laws that would make our communities safer from gun violence.

We think that the ideas in our book about preventing gun violence are so important that we want as many people to read it as possible. And with any contribution, you'll get a copy before anyone else.

Contribute now to help us keep working to make our communities safer, and we'll send you a copy of our new book as a gift for any contribution.

Thank you for your support. We couldn't do this without you.

Mark Kelly

What would be awesome is to post pictures of those books being used for target practice. :)

I doubt they would do this knowing they could lose money by doing it.  If you donate rest assured they will be gaining support and will further threaten the rights of Americans.

There are billionaires are blowing tons of cash on the attempt to remove our rights.  This is all bought and paid for already. Any donation soul be used against the citizen, if you try this 'reverse' buycott.

I tried to enter negative money, and also zero, and also 0.99, and all of these are rejected by the form. You have to enter a dollar or more. Entries such as $1.01 also work.

The only way they'd surely lose money on the book I think is if the shipping costs more than $1.

I could very well be mistaken in believing that giving them one dollar would result in a financial loss. I was believing that the book itself must cost at least a dollar to produce, that the shipping would be at least a dollar, and that the cost of processing the payment, creating shipping labels and packaging, and paying someone to physically package and ship the book would be more than a dollar total (all those tasks could be performed by volunteers I suppose). Their organization often sends out solicitations for donations claiming that "a generous donor" has offered to double any donations received "by the end of the month", "in the next 7 days", etc., so I wouldn't be surprised if they have an agreement with such a wealthy contributor to make up for any and all losses caused by poor people or opponents such as myself donating less than the actual costs involved. The fact that Mark Kelly titles his email "This might not work" could just be an attempt to gain attention, when in fact they have some arrangement that would prevent them from losing money no matter how many people donate the minimum one dollar. I thought it was worth a try. Even if they would lose a small amount per book, it would take a huge number to make any significant financial impact... i vaguely recall seeing that they took in $8 MILLION in donations last year (I could be wrong about that too).

It could also be that someone is funding the book for a donation deal thinking it an important issue and not caring whether they make money or not. I think if they were getting way too many $1 donations they would have a limit to time that the deal is available.
