I have a dumb question for all of you who get the over air broadcasts.
I have considered dumping my cable because all the shows I watch are either available free over the Internet, free or cheap on Amazon Prime, Free or cheap through my ROKU box. And I used to have Netflix which I dumped for Amazon Prime. But they have some content that is not on Amazon Prime or costs less than on Amazon Prime. All the major networks have live streaming and not so live streaming for free for their content. So instead of the $130 per month (Not including Internet) I spend now I figure my TV/Movie watching will cost about $25-$40 per month not including Internet cost.
Here is my question. What do you get over the air that I can't over the Internet for free?
If you splurge for an AppleTV device, you can subscribe to Internet content (sports, etc.) and watch it on the TV. We watched the Super Bowl this year on a 16 ft tall projection over AppleTV using an iPad and HDMI connector.
Roku, Amazon FireTV, and home copies of movies can all be alternate methods of viewing whatever you want. I found a service where people upload digital recordings of "The Walking Dead" within an hour of East Coast broadcasting. I can then download it to my media server and watch it on the Big Sony LCD in the living room 2 hours before it broadcasts in Hawaii! It's HD quality, too!
TV Guide has a listing you can view to see what's playing OTA:
http://www.tvguide.com/listings/Click the "Change" Link where you see "Provider" to select "Hononlulu Area Broadcast (Honolulu) (OTA Broadcast) " if it's not already there. Then you can scroll or search the days and times you normally watch TV for what is available.
The channels I watch most are KGMB for the 6:00 news, MeTV for oldies like MASH, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, EMERGENCY, Gilligan's Island, ... and some movies, ESCAPE TV for forensics, crime, and movies, Antenna TV for some more oldies, GRIT for old westerns and Charles Bronson/Chuck Norris type movies, And Fox for Wheel of Fortune. You do notice a few repeats, in particular there might be the same criminal case discussed on both American Justice and The FBI Files the same week. It's interesting to see a greater amount of detail than you'd see from just one show/perspective.
Since OTA is a one-time investment for proper reception equipment, I see no advantage to sticking to Internet only. I have OTA and Internet, and the two keep me more than entertained. Plus, the nearly $1000 per year I save by canceling cable is no small sum. That's another handgun, more ammo, a trip to Vegas, or an NRA membership upgrade!!
