Interesting as that is most always the case when I got hit while running in Mililani. Drivers always looking for other cars to the left so they can turn right...I got scraped a few weeks ago. Driver looked at me then left. No injuries. Just ego bruised.

I was almost hit walking my dog in a crosswalk.  The car at the light that just turned green facing us and to our left was waiting for traffic so she could turn left.  As soon as the oncoming traffic cleared the intersection she hit the gas and left -- directly at us.  She hit the brakes in time to not hit us, but her bumper was in the crosswalk as she sat diagonally blocking three lanes.  She also gave me a mean look, like it was my fault for being in the street!   :wtf:

I also saw a man almost his a lady in the crosswalk as he was turning right on red -- trying to accelerate in front of cars coming from his left.

Drivers are in too much of a hurry to stop and look around them.  If they do, other drivers get impatient and try to go around or in front of them.

This a perfect example of why my Mom was right. She taught me that you never, NEVER, step out in front of a car waiting to make a right turn at an intersection WITHOUT MAKING EYE CONTACT WITH THE DRIVER.

If you can't make eye contact, keep your ass on the curb until they've passed.

Better to be alive and delayed for a few seconds than dead, secure in the knowledge you had the right of way.

I've practiced this my entire life, and I've never even come close to being hit by a car at an intersection.

"BUT I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!!!"

"I WAS IN THE CROSSWALK!!!"

"THE DRIVER SHOULD'VE SEEN ME!!!"

Edsrers Mom is right. People need to be responsible for their own safety. Seems being right/correct is more important than being safe. The cost of being correct or right could be crippling or worse...

Quote
Im in Left most lane of the freeway, the fast lane, all of a sudden in front of me I see one KINGS SIZE MATTRESS FLYING, upright, in the air, above all the cars, A MOMENT LATER I SEE ONE BOX SPRING TAKE FLIGHT.  I immediately start to slow down, anticipating to stop.

People forget how much "lift" there is on mattresses and 4X8 Masonite sheets and the like on top of a car at speed.  They form pretty good airfoils like that.  And of course the minute the front end gets lifted, more air can get under them.

Driving is a 110% job.

Drive 1/4 mile ahead of your car if possible.

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

Tell your mom I said thanks...

I still think we should ban cars, after all we already have them registered but we still can't manage them from killing and injuring people. Criminal use them. Criminals steal them. Those cars. In a nation like ours...when do we get it? There must be at least TWO cars for every household. As Americans when are we going to get it with this senseless machine that can kill? If we banned cars there won't be any grand theft auto crimes. Police wouldn't shoot people for trying to run them over. No more chop shops. We'd lose weight. The list of ramifications go on...

I got a story about eye contact...
I was crossing in the crosswalk with my very pregnant coworker.
Being a very protective person,  I observed a driver trying to turn into the crosswalk while we were about 10ft into the crossing.
I looked directly at the driver and put my hand out to signal them to wait.
That new white mercedes stopped for a second, then drove right across our path.
It took me about 15 minutes to calm down and stop swearing.

I have a Navy buddy who has been known to dent cars with his size 12.5 boot as they roll through a crosswalk while someone is in it.  If the driver is brave enough to confront an angry 280 lb, 6' 5" tree trunk who wasn't afraid of kicking  a car, he tells the driver, "Why don't we call the Cops, and you can explain how we were both in the crosswalk at the same time!"  That usually ends the confrontation!

Not saying that's the smart thing to do, but he has yet to lose a fight since high school!    >:D

cannot stress eye contact enough
its the initial point of communication
dogs are smart enough to look at a human's eyes for direction
why not some of these humans?
oh yeah, because human's also have the ability to not give a f***
