Why your computer died
« on: October 07, 2017, 08:29:03 AM »
One of my old PC's died last week.
So I opened it up and changed a dead power supply.
It still would not boot. Then I noticed all the capacitors were swollen and leaking.
This is a common cause of dead electronic devices.
Posting a picture so you all know what to look for. See red circles.

It is possible to replace the caps but generally not worth the effort.

Yep. Electrolytics eventually leak.
Have a 1990ish Precision Power 4100AM still using it after replacing all the electrolytics caps. Nostalgic.

It was built by me around y2k.
For the past 11 years it was running dedicated software for video preservation.
Not a general use machine.

Many times, a bad mother board can be caused by a bad power supply (PS).  I use a basic PS tester to make sure the voltages are all correct.  That way I don't hook up a new motherboard to a PS that's going to fry it as well.

If you discover you have multiple bad components, it's time to upgrade to all new parts.  Memory, CPU and motherboard can all be damaged by a faulty PS.

This looks like the tester I have.  You can find a variety of testers that are $15 or less.  Eliminates the question of a bad PS.

The video also shows how to use a multimeter instead...

Had several motherboards die that way years ago when I rolled my own..Sub standard components.

The PCB used is usually multilayer so doing a replacement is quite hard, depending on which layers are soldered to the caps.  There may be soldering tools that work well, but I suspect many hours of labor might turn out in vain.

I used a PS tester first and verified the PS was bad.
I got a lot of obsolete parts....my daughter calls me a hoarder, and she is correct.

That kind of confirms my first thought.  Bad PS may have damaged other components.

Once you replace the MB, you'll need new RAM, new CPU, and maybe new graphics card if video is not included on the MB.  I just built a new system around January.  Installed a CPU liquid-cooled radiator cooler.  My system stays cooler now (don't have A/C).

Going to salvage the drives and toss the rest. No shortage of machines that I can repurpose
