Here's the Big Island Video News video story from two days ago with a resident giving his take it (I like his comment on the neighborhood folk ). Note the flora in the background and the quality of the road surface... that's chipseal, folks. It lasts a few years... we get 175 inches of rain per year on average. It's a great place for people who might want to be on the periphery of things, including law enforcement.

Police Identify Victim In Fern Acres Murder

I honestly wish we still lived there. My wife and I had very fond memories of living in Fern Acres. Especially the Godzilla sized praying mantis we had living in the carport.
SCIENCE THAT CAN’T BE QUESTIONED IS PROPAGANDA!!!

Just heard (8 PM) rapid fire exchange of around 20-25 rounds from behind me in Hawaiian Acres. Can't wait to see the news tomorrow.

Hey, nothing's too pricey for Harry Kim and his crew of crony thieves. You can see the quality of homes, roads and overall wealth just waiting to be taxed to death here in Puna. He asked for 800 MILLION from the state and feds for "lava recovery". In the 80s when I bought here there was no pavement, and all the cops drove their own "subsidized" muscle cars, and they would not drive down our "gravel" potholed roads because they were so hard on their babies. Eventually the county realized they had to at least make a show of providing police cleanup services to the rural subdivisions, so they loaded up on high end stuff... you know, so we all feel safe out here.

Classic interview.

The FACA's told me it was lock down
The FACA's said active shooting.

Fern Acres Community Association. ( apparently pronounced Fawkahs. Like you Fawkahs)
At least he said he owns a shotgun for self defense.

PunaP,
The roads down there are/were nuts. Plus no addresses.
"Turn right at the mango tree. Left at the wrought iron fence...."
That's what customers would tell us.

LOL @ FACAs
Fern Acres Community Association
The original name of the subdivision was "Crescent Acres" (unknown if any Muslim connection).

They probably changed the name so they wouldn't have to hear the community association referred to as "CACA".  :geekdanc:

Fern Acres has some of the best roads in Puna.  Most are paved.  Here is a picture of the road outside my house.  The whole 12.5 square mile subdivision has only one paved road, Ala Kapena from which all the side roads run off of.  All of these subdivisions have a Mountain View zip code.  Mountain View has had quite a few murders this year, including the cop that got shot a few months ago as well as a couple of shootings that did not result in death.   Good question to ask a cop, “Would you drive in here unarmed?”

Flapp,
Look at the density of the trees and my closest neighbor on that side is after the 5th electric pole.
Happily living in Puna

Or, "Would you take 40 minute exercise-walks on the roads in here unarmed?"

I'm now compiling the police reports for the past year for the Puna district, including especially the higher crime rate in my subdivision, to include with my carry application. Yeah, I know, it won't do any good as they have a firm "no issue" policy, but it's just the kind of thing I do. Just because.

When I saw this headline this morning I thought it was going to reference the gunshots I heard last night... but no... Hawaiian Beaches, not Hawaiian Acres... and a few hours earlier. Just another suicide-by-cop shooting.

Man dead after police-involved shooting in Puna

https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/2018/11/27/hawaii-news/man-dead-after-police-involved-shooting-in-puna/

A man is dead after a police-involved shooting that occurred at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday in Puna.

According to a Hawaii Police Department statement, officers responded to a Kahakai Boulevard home in Hawaiian Beaches subdivision after receiving a report of a 42-year-old man who had stabbed himself with a knife. Police say arriving officers were confronted by a man with rifle.

According to police, officers ordered the man to drop the rifle, but the man then pointed the weapon at the officers, who then fired their duty weapons at the man. Police say the man then retreated indoors and officers responded by setting up a safety perimeter and evacuating nearby residents.
