I was thinking the exact same thing as clshade, and got off Oahu to the BI.  The amount of people packed into Honolulu freaked me out.

I already bugged out to the big island.

Not sure what you guys on Oahu are going to do if it comes down to worst case.  :o That is one densely populated place.
I really miss the BI. I won't be moving back until after I retire. I have to wait 9 years for that to happen.  :grrr:

Y'know, ever since I wrote this I've felt a little bad about it.

I know some of the emergency responders and hazard mitigation planners - and Hawaii's team and the Pacific region team is second to none in the world. Seriously. That's a statistic not an opinion. Comes from having lots of practice.

Realistically speaking it really would have to be a worst case scenario for Oahu to go completely down the tubes. If it is a local emergency but the neighbor islands are relatively intact then there would be quick aid. An islands wide disaster would start getting aid in 2-4 weeks - sooner if the airports can be cleared for use.

If the US in general is having some kind of large scale issue and that is the reason the ships stop coming, then its another matter. And that's pretty much the worst of the worst case scenarios short of a super nova or mega-tsunami.

In the informal work I've done that is related hazard mitigation, we generally give folks this advice:
1) Know where your food comes from. Grow it yourself if you can, hunt and fish.
2) Know where your water comes from and have emergency plans should those sources fail.
3) Be able to provide your own power during an emergency - whether that's just light to get you by or a generator to keep the fridge running.
4) Be on good terms with your neighbors. (Which really means "work for an active and integrated local community.")

Item #4 is actually the most important and the hardest (by far) to do. We against the zombies are much more likely to survive than I against the zombies. And We is large enough there will be very few, if any, zombies.

This is true.  Talked with a lady at the board of water supply and she said that all the resiorvors on oahu would only equal 1 days worth of water if something was to happen.  Then she says, but dont worry, with the amount of rainfall everyday it would quickly refill them.  Dunno if she was making a joke or what, but only 1 days worth kinda sucks

1 day of water at normal usage rates would probably last a lot longer at emergency rates. Trouble would be telling all the automatic lawn waterers and whatnot to shut off and save the water for drinking and cooking. Not sure how the DWS would control that in an emergency but I've heard of situations where all water dispensation is limited to hard points in the system. Same place the construction guys get water here. I *think* large sections of the water grid are then shut off and the water is rationed at the controllable hardpoints. That's what happened here in 2006, but I'm not sure about the rest of the island.

Seems a little draconian, but the purpose is to make sure everyone has water for survival and the water guys don't have to deal with every earthquake fracture out at the end of the system. Get the hard points up and (Bam!) no one is going to die for lack of access to water. As long as the roads guys are doing their job, too, and everyone can get to the hard points - which they generally can.

Still. We have at least 5 days of supplies on hand here - not including the stock tank water catchment (for the garden) which can be used via the emergency water purifier. We like to have more but we're constantly eating out of it... so it get replaced and restocked before it goes below 5 days worth. In a place that is prone to earthquakes and hurricanes it is pretty important. We have a fair amount of food growing in the yard, too. if everyone did what they could to prepare - even modestly - for troubled times then those times would be much less troubling. Used to be common sense and still is for folks living out in the rural areas. It really should be common practice for everyone - and that's according to the climate scientists and just not the FEMA emergency response guys.

True story.
I think im at about 5 days worth as well.  Now trying to expand water capabilities as well.  Food grade barrels cost more then i expected, so might just cry once and buy one of those 1200g totes.

I had a neighbor who had military topo maps of the mountains here on Oahu.  Marked on the maps with GPS coordinates were pools and falls up in the mountains.  He even had some marked out with notes that said 4x4 accessible.  Dude was super cool, but him and his wife moved to Molokai.  He was a real survivalist kind of guy.  I don't know if anyone saw that Jason Scott Lee thing last week about the watershed here in Hawaii.  I have to admit a lot of what I remember growing up in terms of mountain pools and streams has changed a lot.  We used to go hike and swim all over.  Now days the pools are either dried up or all pilau.

On another note, god damn Jason Scott Lee is old now rofl.  Makes me feel old.  Anyone know why he stopped making movies?  Was it cause he didn't want to anymore or cause he couldn't get any roles after "Dragon"

I don't know how many of you read Shooting Illustrated but this month's issue has an article on bug out bags. I just picked the magazine up at KMart last night.  I will post more on the article later.
