Allow Guns or Compensate Shooting Victims: Arizona Approves Gun-Free Zones Financial Liability Bill

A Senate panel in Arizona approved a bill that would make gun-free zones liable for firearm-related injuries sustained by people within such places. Republican Sen. David Gowan introduced the proposal indicating that gun-free zones had to protect law-abiding citizens or allow them to protect themselves. This would allow people to sue for damages when their loved ones sustain injuries or lose their lives from gunshots in gun-free zones.

“It’s just a simple bill that says if a government creates gun-free zones which prohibit a law-abiding citizen from defending themselves, then if harm comes to them because of that policy that entity will be held liable for the damages,” Sen. Gowan said. “If you have a policy like this, you protect them or allow them to protect themselves or there will be consequences.”

Arizona Citizens Defense League and Republican lawmakers welcomed the proposal while League of Arizona Cities and Towns opposed it. The proposal passed with a 4-3 vote and will head to the full Senate.

The state of Michigan has a similar bill which was introduced by State Rep. Gary Eisen, R-St. Clair Township on September 17, 2019. The Michigan House Bill 4975 sought to remove immunity from prosecution for gun-free zones when people get shot in such places. The bill was referred to the Committee on Judiciary.

Most mass shootings take place in gun-free zones because criminals do not respect gun-free posters. If gun control groups believed in the safety of gun-free zones, they would not oppose having such pieces of legislation. Such groups are interested in passing gun control laws just to make a political statement rather than ensure the security of residents. Hopefully, having financial liability will make them reconsider the effects of the policies they endorse.
