Archery Range Hearing
« on: July 08, 2012, 12:59:15 PM »
Seen this in todays paper. I know a few here were interested in archery and wanted to know what was happening with the archery range. Perhaps if we come out and support them they could come support us with koko head.

The city department of parks and recreational will hold a public hearing Monday to solicit testimony on the fate of the kapiolani park archery range.  It will be held in the first floor conference room of the paki hale building, at 3840 paki ave, from 5-7pm.  Gathering testimony on ways to keep Tue range open, either at Tue park or at another location.  Interested residents urged to present ideas or concerns at the meeting. You can also write or fax testimony to 7683053. Written testimony must be submitted by Tuesday.

Wow. Nice catch. I didn't even know there was an archery range in Kapiolani.

Is it just me or is there an increase on the attacks on shooting sports lately in Hawaii? ???

The one they are talking about is the one in the back by the tennis courts I believe. The article also said something about it being closed for the last year because of a incident with a stray arrow.  It was a small article way in the back of the paper. I figure post it because some others have asked about it before.  They also said there is another range at koko head if people want to shoot there. I figured we could all support each other.

And yes it seems like there is a increase against shooting sports.  Just gotta stay ontop of these meetings and show up amd show support

I used to use the Kapiolani archery range years ago (around 2002 or so).   The threats to close it down have been around for quite a while and it was always because of an arrow showing up at the tennis courts.  In order for an arrow to reach the nearest court, you'd have to miss really badly HORIZONTALLY.  Even as a beginner I don't think I've missed like that - it was easier to either go over or under the bale.  If you go over, theres quite a bit of empty area behind the bales until theres a fenced off area  (which is still not the tennis courts).  I'm also a tennis player, but I thought I read that the archery range was there first...

Yup it's been there for quite some time.  Last time I shot there was 20 years ago.  Trouble with this whole thing is the parks guy can make an easy fix to satisfy both the tennis court people and the archery people but it either too much of an idiot to do so, or is purposely not trying to.

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Archers hope their message on Monday night hit the target. A popular range has been off-limits for months due to a stray arrow, but the city will soon decide whether it is safe to re-open the facility with some changes.

A public hearing at Paki Hale brought out dozens of people. A couple of them wanted to shutdown the Kapiolani Park Archery Range, but most of them testified in support of the site. Kenwei Chong practiced there as a child. Now his daughter is following in his footsteps.

"With the 'Hunger Games,' my younger daughter, 11 years old, kind of got into it and we thought it would be a passing stage and she's on her third bow now. She's gotten so good and it and passionate about it," said Chong.

The targets have been taped off since April when a man pointed his arrow toward the sky and accidentally let go, nearly hitting a player at a nearby tennis court. It's not the first time stray arrows have been found.

"The Diamond Head Tennis Association or Tennis Court Association, they do have records of these things found, arrows found in the courts," said Department of Parks and Recreation Director Gary Cabato.

Cabato said the facility was built decades ago as a temporary range since others were in the works. He was pleased with Monday's turnout and all of the ideas offered.

"I liked the part about having a monitor who is a certified master or certified archer there to monitor, a permit system, an education system," Cabato said.

"The place has co-existed a long time between tennis and archery, and I think improved safety measures could continue that," Chong said.

The testimony from the hearing will be reviewed and Cabato will receive a recommendation. He said he is still considering several options.

"The option is to build a barrier or build a netting system or build something to protect the general public or even relocate or reposition the targets," Cabato explained.

A permanent closure would leave three archery ranges on the island, at Central Oahu Regional Park, Kapolei and Koko Head. Those who practice at Kapiolani Park said there is something special about the spot.

"It's the practice and the passion of the sport, but I think it's also that feeling of contributing, educating people and being part of the community," Chong said.

According to Cabato, the decision-making process could take up to a month.

That sounds good. Hopefully they will make some changes and reopen the range. I really like the education program idea, keep people safe through education. I would take an archery class purely for the learning experience.
