Unexploded ordinense found on Ft DeRussy
« on: June 15, 2012, 09:00:42 AM »
Was walking around fort DeRussy yesterday after work when something shinny was popping out of the ground near a tree.  I went to inspect it further and saw that it was a bullet, and about a foot away pooping out of a tree root I found the rest of the clip.  Who knows what else is buried around that fort, or where to go and report this too.  Last thing we need is a tourist finding a live grenade and trying to take it back with him or something accidentally going off.

Now they're going to try and say it came from Kokohead or something.

If you are going to say it came from Kokohead you better throw it up on your roof first and take some pictures.

That's a loaded enbloc clip for a M1 Garand. The ammo os 30-06 Springfield or .30 cal US. Black tips on the bullets are armor piercing, but perform as match grade ammo.

Did you find that near the museum?

I do believe that the radical and crazy notion that the Founders meant what they said, is gradually soaking through the judicial system.

UXO is fairly common in HI.  Most are discarded training items but there are live items.  Not much can be done but address them as they are discovered since what was done in the past cannot be undone.  A grenade (live or practice) looks roughly the same as a 2" pipe nipple, and are almost impossible to identify with out inspection by a qualified tech.  If you think it is bad, think about how things are in Guam or any other Acts of War sites.

If you find a questionable item, mark the location and call the police.  It is important to report the item since it will put it on someone's radar/to do list.  The Police will secure the area and contact the appropriate EOD personnel.  Best not to pick things up.

Frankly, I'm having a hard time figuring out how anyone can say a loaded Garand clip found on the ground can be called "unexploded ordnance." As far as I know, no explosive .30-06 or 7.62 NATO catridges (the only cartridges loaded into Garand clips)  were ever adopted by the U.S.  (There was a spotter cartridge loaded with a small charge to better mark impact points, but it was never adopted.)

If I'm wrong, someone educate me.

Small arms are typically not considered UXO.  The OP suggested if the clip was present, a grenade may also be present.  It is a possibility, but it is also equally possible the Ark of the Covenant may be found near by said clip.  The rounds as discovered, are not something to be concerned about.

Bottom line is where ever troops were present and trained, UXO or discarded munitions may be present.  The baseline risk increases as evidence supporting UXO is discovered.  In this case that is not the case.

My son found this while walking around with his metal detector at barbers point. It was burried in the grass near the beach. Looks like a .50 aircraft bullet.

Fascinating to think that might be a .50 from 07 Dec 41.  I don't know how well jacketed bullets hold up out in the weather, and I guess it would be impossible to tell, but...

Still fascinating, though.  I sometimes wonder what kind of stories some of my older guns might tell if they could.

Ferinstance, I had an Amberg 1918 Mauser with the initials "EWL" roughly carved into the stock... and I've heard of a few examples of older milsurps having the issuee's name on a slip of paper under the buttplate or in cleaning kit compartments, etc.

If those old guns could talk.

(Note: Some American .50s (APEI-169, M02 --grey/yellow tip) and some Japanese 12.7s were loaded with high explosives, so those might be considered unexploded ordnance.)

That reminds me of this one, where she shows two "bullets" which hit her house:

Maybe so, but 'twarn't them two "bullets" unless someone hurled them out of a slingshot or something.

Some dumb photographer probably handed her these two "bullets" for display purposes, but that's not what the text says.
