Pistol cleaning
« on: July 26, 2021, 09:07:31 AM »
Just wondering how often everyone cleans their handguns.  With the high cost of ammo, many people can’t afford shooting 100+ rounds per training session.  Would you clean your gun after shooting only 50 rounds?   I’ve been cleaning my handguns after every range trip…my AR is a different story though.

Personal choice. My OCD kicks in and I clean after every range trip. Usually day of.  Regardless if I shoot 1 mag or 400rds that 1 trip.

I know guys that clean only when it starts to jam.

I would clean them after every session.
At least a little oil in the bbl and action.

That gets me to thinking.....
Those video shooting games strive for realism.
Do they make the shooter stop and clean the gun sometimes?
If not, they should.
Maybe throw in a malfunction sometimes too.

Include a packet of hoppes #9 for that immersive experience.

The old chînese gun club guys used to have ammo can with wd40.
Dunk the gun and blow out with a compressor.
No disassembly. Less wear. Gun stays tight.

They should make the shooter have to go to the armory and wait for 5 hours to do a turn in only to have the armorer tell you it's still dirty. Come back when it's clean....

Does cleaning often reduce barrel wear?  My 1911 sometimes has failures if I don’t clean after 200 rounds.  I noticed my CZ will lose some accuracy if not cleaned.  All in all I try to clean after every range trip.  Thanks everyone for all the responses.

I've seen a few opinions that the number one cause of pistol malfunctions is over cleaning.  Taking the gun apart (more just field stripping) means more opportunities to repalce something wrong and cause malfunctions.

I've gone through 900+ rds of 9mm in 4 days of training and a few rds for testing on the 5th day, and I didn't clean the gun until the 6th day.  I didn't want to introduce problems while cleaning.  If it ain't broke, ...

If you're going to shoot once a month, then cleaning soon after a range day is advised.  Store the firearm clean.  If you're going to do a deep clean, then I'd recommend taking that gun out of your defensive arsenal until you get a chance to function test it at the range.  Then, just do a light cleaning and it's good for duty again.

If you do a light wipe down and a few wet patches through the barrel, that should be enough to get rid of the majority of the gunk.

Less is more.

I guess it depends what you use to clean it with. Brass bristles are softer than steel. Ammonia based solvents will prob eat away metal but not to a degree where youd actually notice, well maybe 20 years down the road if you clean alot alot alot.

Lately i been using a smaller caliber attachement (i.e. if im cleaning a 9mm barrel, id used a 5.56 or .22 attachement) and wrap it with paper towels, then use clp or grease.

I clean after every outing cause i dont shoot often anymore. So its usually stored for 6 plus months. I dont want rust etc.

============
I flush the cruds out with wd40 or LPS1
Lube with Break-Free just cuz I won a big can of it at a shootin' match
Hoppes and breakfree in the bore
I might drop some mobil1 motor oil on some parts.
Corrosion-Block on seldom used guns.

Cleaning would be with Clp oil. But if its real dirty mpro7 or kroil. And whole lotta paper towels. Rarely do i ever use a bore brush made for that particular caliber size anymore.

Lube is straight up clp grease. Nothing else. I use to use oil way back then but realized i needed to oil it a bit more often cause it would either run or dissipate. With grease, i do it once every 6 months or so unless i go range.
