Let's setup an emergency comms plan in this thread.
« on: December 25, 2020, 06:22:00 PM »
Let's setup an emergency comms plan in case of any kind of emergency.  Use 146.700 as the first point to contact.  Take any private chat to 147.50, offset +5.

Yes, get a Baofeng UV-9R (2020) model from the Mirkit store on eBay.  The full package with extended battery.  I will create a master freq dope file to upload from CHIRP.  CHIRP programs the radio from your computer, get the programming cable.

Watch the T-Rex videos on YouTube about communications.

Create an account on repeaterbook.com, I will keep the thread updated when I create my account.  A lot of usernames are taken.  I will update the repeater list and find a way to make a screenshot of all the repeaters.

Ewa Beach Repeater
Honolulu Repeater
Kaneohe Repeater

Use the callsign as 2 Alpha Hotel - State your callsign and I'll add it to the list.

Does the use of these radios require a certification as a HAM radio user?

Not in an emergency and 147.7 is an open freq.  I can advise to watch the training course for the exam on YouTube and. Just take the exam, pass it and see if you can get a vanity callsign for an extra fee.

Hawaii is a diffcult communications area with the mountains and valley's.  Sometime messages need to be passed from repeater to repeater, instructing the party to join you on different repeater freq, or just the message itself.  I will look into the available frequencies that might be line of sight from the west side to Kaneohe.

Form micro communities, comprising of a number of streets and closing them down with the member at the end of the the street is assigning checkpoints with his neighbors.  Have a perimeter closed off with the street or streets that are part of the micro community.  Create your own comms plan in case of emergencies like black out, tsnunami, flooding and hurricanes/tropical storms.

Ex, 1hr check-ins from each check point and change of guard.  Micro-community leaders notify 911 that you have secured a perimeter of neighbors at such and such streets.  Have community leaders fall into one command location for the duration of the emergency and receive/exchange transmissions with an observation post or a house with a vantage point, check points and patrols.....we happen to have a kids park at the north west corner of the micro-community so that is under constant observation and that there are reports as needed and the same hourly check in.  Say "OP to command, vehicles approaching from the park, approaching checkpoint a, b or c."  Or if you're pheonetic like me, use pheonetics.  The checkpoint should already be on the air and alerted.  If they are neighbors and you already positively ID, let them pass.

If riots head towards your micro community, the rest of the neighbors need a situation report, or. SITREP.  If you spot something out of the ordinary, say SPOTREP and describe the situation on the command frequency. Same thing for a SITREP, those are hourly check-ins.  Say "SITREP, 0300hrs, all clear.  Out.";or "SITREP, large group of BLM/ANTIFA approaching checkpoint Alpha"

You spot a shady vehicle coming slowly towards the checkpoint that you don't recognize as a neighbor.  Say "SPOTREP, Checkpoint Charlie to Command, unknown vehicle approaching at a slow speed on Kaipu road". The commander on duty (Decide on who is the micro-community leader and 2nd in command, intelligence and supply leaders.) consults with his staff and makes the necessary decisions and that the orders are passed to the relevant party.

The command center could launch a DJI Mavic to watch the situation from above, if they are on different streets or in the rear with the gear.

The point is, when the alarms go off for a hurricane is heading to hit Ewa Beach the hardest for example.... micro-communities lock down their neighbor hood.  This is an important tyoe of lock down but who knows if we will be alone to fend for ourselves and there is major damage or loss of life.  Prepare for the worst, pray for the best

Most of you are mil or ex mil or leo anyway, use sop comms protocol but make sure everyone is on the same page.  Begin documentation of events.

There are private clubs that put up their own repeaters to get over the mountains as well. Building your own dipole is not that difficult and the law says your neighbors are not allowed to complain. It’s even legal to operate a ht while you are driving. Waiting for my new one to show up and will try that frequency. I like the conversations that people have on the local nets. Fishing, computers, astronomy, etc.

When we had the missile crisis I turned on the ht and found out it was fake before Ige did

I have a 5R.
Other than VHF Ch 16 and weather it is pretty quiet.
Ham stuff doesn't work so well here.

I'm thinking of going with a Marine SSB,
Problem is I'm not on a boat anymore.

Suggestions?

A little spicy but DMR radios connect to the internet and is basically sending data packets instead of analog packets..

A DMR can also serve as a repeater

Get a mobile HAM radio like a Yaesu 50w.

There is some math involved but pretty easy if you take it step by step.

Goods info, thanks!  The Nashville bomb took out the AT&T communications center and cut off comms for a 180 mile radius.

Yeah that is actually a good excuse to get back into it. The internet is way too vulnerable now even without exploding campers. Sooner or later we are going to get disruptions that last days or weeks and it sure will be nice to still get the news from someone other than a billionaire

Turns out the at&t center was a major civilian and military comms node.  3 other major infrastructures have been attacked min the past week

Wow. We will see what happens next. This looks like Black Swan territory. On the bright side I got my new baofeng, but only realized after the fact that the data cable was not included. Oopsie...

when you have a boating accident, you're not supposed to lose the boat.

I got the Baofeng f8HP which is an improved version of the uv5r with a stronger signal, bigger battery, and better antenna. Those are all upgrades I would plan on doing anyway. If I really get back into it I will get something more waterproof, but it will be a toss up between that and a mobile unit to try and get over the horizon with.

That's the Mirkit UV-9R renamed.  Get a 24 or 32 in tactical antenna, programming cable, car battery recharger.

I would keep a 50w box radio in the car and hardwire it to the car battery and get a long removeable or whip antenna that runs coax cable to the radio antenna input..

Let's say, we all tune in on 146.7 every 30 mins and listen for 5 at 8pm 2000hrs every night starting out to just see who's in your area.  Call out "any Hotel 2 Alpha on" 3 times a minute."

Start this tonight?
