Can I mail my firearms to a family member in Texas?
« on: February 17, 2021, 08:33:22 AM »
Can I mail my rifles and pistols to my Godmother in Texas and fly there to enter them into my secured storage unit?  How can I get my firearms out of this state to a free state?  I can't fly with them, we're talking 8 long arms and 6 handguns.  I'll then unregister them from the Hawaiian registry.

I guess that would depend on which airline.
I believe the "usual" is 5 firearms per piece of luggage.
If possible, by breaking down your long guns (AR platforms, shotguns) you might get 2-3 firearms per case/ 4 cases.
5 hand guns
3 long guns
3 long guns
2 long guns 1 hand gun
At $30-$50 per piece of luggage, may be cheaper than paying FFL on both ends

You can use USPS for long guns

https://pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htm

https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/may-nonlicensee-ship-firearm-through-us-postal-service#:~:text=The%20U.S.%20Postal%20Service%20recommends,used%20to%20ship%20a%20handgun.

Handguns must go through contract shipper (UPS, FedEx, etc.). That will be super expensive. Must be overnighted and signature receipt. And UPS is the only carrier doing it to the best of my knowledge.

You could have an FFL package them for you and they can use USPS under their FFL license, if they are shipping TO YOU not a relative. Your name would have to be the recipient.

Go buy a good Pelican or similar carry on size case and put all your handguns in that and check it.  OR get an empty case with the soft cases for them, put some clothes in with it and you can lock up your luggage

Is there any difference in type of locks used if a handgun is in a case?

I understand that locks do not need to be  accessable by TSA for rifle cases..................

Locks can only be opened by you. NO TSA LOCKS even though TSA says you can. But would you want TSA able to access your firearms?

They can be keyed or combo, but only you can have access to it

Firearms
When traveling, comply with the laws concerning possession of firearms as they vary by local, state and international governments.

If you are traveling internationally with a firearm in checked baggage, please check the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website for information and requirements prior to travel.

Declare each firearm each time you present it for transport as checked baggage. Ask your airline about limitations or fees that may apply.

Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only. As defined by 49 CFR 1540.5 a loaded firearm has a live round of ammunition, or any component thereof, in the chamber or cylinder or in a magazine inserted in the firearm. Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock unless TSA personnel request the key to open the firearm container to ensure compliance with TSA regulations. You may use any brand or type of lock to secure your firearm case, including TSA-recognized locks.

Bringing  an unloaded firearm with accessible ammunition to the security checkpoint carries the same civil penalty/fine as bringing a loaded firearm to the checkpoint. You may find information on civil penalties at the Civil Enforcement page.

Firearm parts, including magazines, clips, bolts and firing pins, are prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.

Replica firearms, including firearm replicas that are toys, may be transported in checked baggage only.

Rifle scopes are permitted in carry-on and checked baggage.

Curious, why are there TSA locks at all?
What use are they?

I don't see any verbiage on the TSA site re: limitation on the number of firearms, nor on a few of the airline baggage policies.

There are a few airports/airlines that are complete jerks when inspecting luggage. Rather than page you and deal with having to get you to your flight after a short layover, they just automatically cut the locks.  They then get the airline to let you know what they did.

If you had TSA-approved locks, they could have used their universal key to open it and avoided cutting your locks.

The problem is there are some 50K yearly complaints of missing items when TSA inspects the bags.  Firearms are a high value item, so those would tempt any TSA thief who comes across them.

For most gun owners, it's worth a ruined lock to keep your guns away from unsupervised TSA employees.  At least you know when and where the lock was cut, making it easier for a theft to be investigated.  An empty case that had the lock opened with a key somewhere in transit makes it harder to figure out who opened it.

Not every airline or airport will cut the locks before notifying you to request the key first.  That's how they are supposed to do it.

I had a cheap luggage lock on a regular suitcase when I went on one of my many trips to Korea.  When I arrived, the bag had a zip tie where the lock was.

I have custom padlocks with my last name and cell # on them.  Hopefully they call before cutting.  Even if they do, I carry an extra set of the same padlocks in my carry-on.  They make my carry-on heavier but cheap insurance to minimize things that could go wrong.  I also keep a current printed copy of TSA and the particular airline's firearm policy with me.  You'd be surprised how many of them don't know there own rules.

Good info.  Will be transporting some toys to the mainland in the near future and wondered about the whole TSA lock thing.

I like the idea of spare locks.  Will be flying non-stop to avoid any extra baggage handling spots.

What mini GPS trackers are useful to stick inside a magwell of a lower if I fly them to Texas, Bluetooth or wifi?

I could get double hardcases, all of them are carbines.  Maybe I could only take my URGI, Sig MCX, M1A SOCOM 16 and Tavor and keep my PSA carbines here.  Illl take all of my handguns except 1 9mm and 1 .22lr.

If I shipped them the same day as my flight I could address it to myself and beat them to my Godmother's place.

Do I really need to ship from a FFL here to a FFL in Tx?  It would be cheapest and safest if I fly with them all the way there, either non-stop or a layover in Vegas.....or Denver?

Pls help me plan my trip to save my guns.  Hawaii is going to be emboldened to enact the harshest anti-2a laws and I don't see much challenge to them.

When choosing a set of locks, you should make sure the shackles of the locks are not any longer than necessary to allow them to close when on the case.

In other words. a lock with a long shackle that allows for the lid to open further than a tiny bit isn't a good idea.  A handgun could easily slide through a partially open case without having to remove the locks.

There are many threads here talking about locking cases when traveling.  Should probably just link to those instead of reinventing the wheel.

Saw one photo where someone put steel bolts in the shackle to prevent the long shackle issue above as well as stopping someone from easily cutting the lock.

A bit of red Loctite on the bolt would be good idea for some clown trying to remove it.

I know this has been covered, but search here is painful.

Here's the one with the bolts on the shackles.

I said "bolts" instead of "nuts" to avoid peanut gallery non-comment posts.  Oh, well...      :geekdanc:

Ah, I had envisioned a large 1/2" or bigger stuck through the shackle with a nut  on it.  Fill the space up, so to speak.

I like the idea of spare locks.  Will be flying non-stop to avoid any extra baggage handling spots.

When I purchased my 12 ga and 45-70 Henry rifle in Wisconsin while on vacation I put both rifles in a hard case and checked it in at the Delta Ticket counter.  They had me fill out some paper work then I was escorted to TSA.  There TSA asked for the key for the 3 master padlocks and they proceeded to inspect the the firearms to make sure they were unloaded.  Once satisfied they locked up the case and put a large zip tie around the case through the handle and returned the key back to me.  TSA sent it out to Delta's baggage.  This was back in October 2019.
