Walk in to register question
« on: July 29, 2021, 09:22:55 AM »
Hi,

I was wondering if the 5-day rule applies now that walk in to register is going on?

Or are they honoring the covid rules where you can register later down the road.

Im specifically asking bout long guns. Bought another shottt hehehe.

I tried calling hpd but no answer after 4 attempts. If it says on the website i misread it and didnt see it lol. Im dyslexic most times. So sorry in advance.

Thank you if anyone replies.  :shaka:

I would say best practice now that they are doing walk-ins is to try to get there within the 5 days. The waiver of time was entirely at the discretion of the Chief of Police per the order

Sections 134-3(a) and (b), HRS, registration, mandatory, exceptions, to
the extent necessary such that the chiefs of police of the counties, in their sole
discretion, may suspend the deadline whereby a person must register a firearm
within five days after arrival in the State of the person or firearm, whichever
arrives later, and the deadline whereby a person acquiring a firearm pursuant to
section 134-2, HRS, must register the firearm within five days of acquisition.

But if they turn you away, try to get as much info from the officer (name/badge no./etc.) so you can note it when you do go back and harassed
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

I walked in and registered a long gun quite recently. They never asked about my date of acquire in any way.

Private sale?  FFL/Dealer?

Both are required to notify HPD of the sale.  Chances are good HPD already knew when you acquired it.

It's not happened to me, but from what others have posted...

If you buy a firearm -- private sale or dealer -- the seller is required to send HPD notification of the sale.

If HPD gets that notice, and you haven't registered in the 5 days, you will likely get a call from HPD to gently remind you to register.  That's based on the pre-COVID 5-day limit between acquiring and registering.

If you take a gun in to register after the 5 days, they won't hassle you about it being later than the 5 days. They are happy to register it.

The only scenario I imagine where late registration can bite you is if you're arrested for something else.  Having an unregistered firearm can then be used to pile onto the other charges.

I've never heard of HPD charging anyone who they know acquired a gun and failed to register it.  As I said, a courtesy call is about all I have heard of.

Doesn't mean it didn't happen, though ....

Ah i see i see...

Thanks guys!

Its through ffl dealer. Henry at prime sports got it/ still has it. I was just curious to know if i grab it tomorrow (friday the 30th) i wont get penalized if i try to register it next week Thursday. Cant do it mon-wed due to work. And today i work so i wont be able to grab the gun today and try to register it tomorrow. And thats being optimistic that ill be able to get a spot for the "said" day i try to register it. But judging by the other thread everyone has been able to register it the day they initially go down to hpd.

Also is it still 0700 hours, that they'll give you a time stamp when to register?

Edit: interesting read, i didnt know they tried to make us have a license to own ammo back then. Funny now they trying again and i think cali is like that now? Havent been keeping up with the news on it tho, so i could be wrong...

Interestingly I went to pick up a PTA 9:00A this morning, and when they handed it over I asked VERY NICELY how to go about getting a registration slot, they looked at the books and told me come back at 2PM and gave me a paper with my time slot on it. I showed up 15 mins early and was out the door by 1:58.

I still swear by going to HPD early mornings, they are in a way better mood than they are after lunch til close.

I was there before doors opened at 8 to apply for that PTA, being first while they are still rubbing sleep out of their eyes isnt the best time to show up either.
