Cool...I remember using the old military ashtrays along with flammables to heat up our C-Rats, which was fantastic at that time.

Rocket stoves and Soda can stoves are common things I teach kids to make.  The soda can stoves are compact and lightweight and fit well in a 3 day pack or similar.  They boil a perfect amount of water efficiently for a bag of Wise or Mountain House foods.  I either use Heet or denatured alcohol.  Isopropyl will work if it is in the 90% range, whereas the more commonly sold 70% does not burn hot enough.

The firebox also serves a good dual purpose in that it makes a great wind screen for the soda can  or sterno type stoves.  The up side of the soda can is that you do not need dry tinder, downside is you need to pack your own fuel albeit a small amount goes a long way.  A rocket stove is not as portable as a small firebox, buy the trade off is that they are much more efficient and will use less fuel (wood / combustible material) to get the same cooking job done in a shorter period of time.

The Firebox and Emberlit are rip offs of a free version of the design, called the Nimblewill Nomad Stove. I was trying to design a stove similar to the Emberlit when I discovered the plans for the NNS, which he gives to everyone for free. With a pair of sheers , sheet metal and maybe a dremel tool or drill, you can build your own $50-75 portable wood stove for a few bucks, and it can also be used as an alcohol stove.
Agreed.  We have been making firebox type stoves out of large coffee cans or similar since I was a kid.  Several designs are simple to DIY and are almost free to make.  The very efficient versions of portable wood stoves are the rocket type stoves.

Interested test on different fuels to use in an alcohol stove. I was surprised to see that the rubbing alcohol did extremely well, and I'd assume that it would be far cheaper than using the DEET here in Hawaii.

Yep, as I mentioned above the isopropyl or "rubbing alcohol" is effective provided it is the the 90-91% range.  Most of the stuff you commonly see on the shelves is 70% which is not ideal.  Also some fuels heat, ignite and burn better in various types of can stoves.
