I NEVER tailgate. That is my pet peeve about driving.

Over 45 MPH, I use the 3 second rule.  But at slower speeds, I become a never ending patsy for people looking to get in front of the people behind me.

If you keep 3-4 car lengths spacing, people will fill in that space, because they want to get just one more car ahead in a line of traffic.

The person taking advantage of your prudent following distance will rob you of it.  So now you have to slow down to create another buffer between your car and the lane-changer.

Your new following distance invites another car -- so you keep having to slow down.  You and everyone else behind you are being "forced" to slow down over and over because other cars are pulling in front.  That in turn will likely piss off someone behind you who will eventually change lanes to move around you.

Your following distance is potentially going to trigger a little road rage incident.  Don't be surprised if someone changes lanes in front of you and brake-checks you to make a point.

Bottom line -- I sometimes keep a closer distance than "3 seconds" based on speed, but I pay particular attention to what's going on ahead of traffic to identify any situations that might cause a sudden stop -- compensating for reduced reaction time.

if you tailgate you expose your car to chips from debris kicked up by the vehicle you're tailgating. So keep the hood of your Tacomas chip free by not tailgaiting.

For the longest time, as far as I can remember ever since I got married and started a family; I've said a silent prayer every time before I start the car.

It can get scary out there.

Be safe everyone.

Yep.  Defensive driving skills are not a match for the entitled, gotta-be-first, why-hit-my-brakes-when-I-can-cut-you-off drivers.

Nice thing about motorcycles is it's easier to get away from the crazies, but if someone wants you dead and pulls of a surprise then there's not really a whole lot you can do.
If you allow government to break the law for an "emergency" they will create "emergencies" to break the law.
