Aloha and Kokua for Maui
« on: October 10, 2023, 12:10:18 PM »

When the Maui fire happened, everybody chipped in money and prayers and aloha and love and good intentions and warm and fuzzy hugs.
Three months later, you have price gouging because those people who got burned out need a place to stay and all that money that was donated for the survivors is floating around and greedy landlords see $ signs.
According to the report, greedy landlords are using a loophole to increase rent to outrageous levels. Nice people over there, huh?

Gosh I wonder why the kids are all talking about communism these days?
If you allow government to break the law for an "emergency" they will create "emergencies" to break the law.

Some of those 'nice Maui people" also broke into one of the warehouses where they kept the supplies donated for the recovery and rescue effort, including a solar powered generator.

Quote
A group of volunteers known as My Collective Contributors is still reeling from the
theft which happened late Friday night. Thieves ripped the fence open of the
warehouse or hub in Kahului and stole clothes, tents, household items, and even
adult diapers.

“It’s just frustrating because you’re out there doing good for people and then like,
who does that? Who does that to people in need?” said Deanna Davis-Alexander,
who is with My Collective Contributors.

The group has been working with other businesses and non-profit organizations
to help fire victims in Lahaina and Kula. Davis-Alexander said it’s heartbreaking
and frustrating that someone would do something like this.
Quote
Among the stolen items is a solar powered generator, and she’s asking people
to be on the lookout for someone trying to sell it.

“That was really heartbreaking. We use that to power our site and to charge phones
and what not, we’re down there every day so at least our volunteers can have some
kind of power,” said Davis-Alexander.

this can be explained with supply and demand curves. There was a definite shift in a fixed supply of homes with demand remaining constant. Same demand on a reduced supply of homes. This would shift to a higher price point. Of course govt here would lay the blame on property owners.

....
Yep ...supply and demand up to a point. But 3k for a studio sounds like gouging to me. Time to cue up the video of everybody holding hands singing "Hawaiʻi Aloha".??

This topic makes me wonder, realistically, how long would it take to rebuild 100 houses from planning to hiring contractors to the keys to the front door?

I think they are not handing out building permits until they’ve starved out the residents out of Lahaina.

I think they are not handing out building permits until they’ve starved out the residents out of Lahaina.

https://www.civilbeat.org/2023/09/mauis-fire-victims-are-frustrated-by-insurance-hassles-financial-delays/

Insurance executive Mahealani K. K. Strong, executive agent and owner of Insurance Associates in Lahaina, said the decision to shut down the fire zone has prevented insurance adjustors from visiting properties to assess the extent of the damage they suffered. That’s meant that claims have been left pending for months while survivors wait for answers on how much they will be granted.

At the hearing and in a subsequent interview, Strong said that at least 44 insurance adjustors arrived on Maui within days of the fire, “ready to rock,” and that she attempted to establish her office as an insurance hub for their work, to help get claims settled more quickly.

But she said local officials would not allow her to use her undamaged office, located on Kupuohi Street in upper Lahaina, and that they ignored her pleas to allow a group of adjustors wearing protective gear to enter the burn site in a bus. She noted that the adjustors were all disaster specialists with experience operating in hazardous zones.

Instead, she said, while officials rebuffed her calls and emails, pointing the finger at other agencies as the source of the slowdown, hundreds of survivors have been left to wait. She noted that political leaders have been allowed to tour the disaster site but that adjustors have been kept out.

At one point she pushed her way into the county’s emergency operations center hoping to find someone who could help her, she said, but never got a reply from numerous officials to whom she explained the situation.

Strong said that at least six insurance adjustors from the mainland told her they had never before seen a burn site locked down in this way and had never before been prevented from doing their work in a timely manner.

Her firm is handling more than 1,000 claims.

it's is concerning that govt officials were allowed to visit a week after the fires but yet residents are stuck trying to get the 'govt approval' to rebuild. Now they say they need to do a cleanup. Where are property rights? Can the govt come onto your property to do a 'cleanup' after a fire?

The shutdown part reminds me of the way khsc is shut down. The government is so paranoid about toxic chemicals, it paralyzed all practical and common sense action and forward progress. Imagine 80 years ago if we had to fight ww2 with all the precautions and safety rules of today.
Imagine trying to build khsc from scratch with with all the rules and regs of today.
---end of rant---
 :stopjack:
Hopefully the state will close the rent increase loophole to make all those donations last for a few years while actual rebuilding gets going.

the empty piece of land above Kunia and the road alongside it burned a few times. Where were these "experts" then?
