Maui County Office of Economic Development Director Luana Mahi was placed on leave with pay this week after she reportedly authorized grants for her own family members.

Tax documents show Mahi’s son is the president of Brilliant Minds Media, the organization that was awarded a grant to build the controversial wall of fame at Kahului Airport.

One point of contention for many local residents was the exhibit features pictures of mainstream celebrities under a sign with the word kama’aina, which was misspelled.

In March, the finance department conducted an audit of grants the office administered.

According to a press release from the county, future payments of grants in the internal audit are pending further review to ensure compliance with county code.

County directors and deputies are also undergoing an ethics training review.

“We have a zero-tolerance policy for any ethical violations, and I want to assure everyone that all infractions will be met with appropriate consequences," Mayor Richard Bissen said in the press release.

Bissen’s administration could not comment further at this time because the investigation is ongoing.
