Gun deaths vs Overdose deaths

Info for your future testimony or talking to people.

Hawaii had 244 overdose deaths last year.  Compare this to Hawaii's average gun victim deaths of 15 per year, and gun suicides of 45 per year.  15 gun victim deaths compared to 244 overdose deaths is a drop in the bucket.  A better comparison is the 45 suicides to 244 overdoses since they're self-induced.  Overdoses are over 5x greater.

Yet the focus is always on guns (not criminals either) where 50 anti gun bills are introduced in a year and politicians talk big about banning guns and saving lives.  You rarely see tougher drug crime bills introduced.  In fact, you usually see a push for decriminalization instead.  Politicians rarely denounce the use of drugs or talk about the overdose deaths.

Bring that up in your conversations.

I think the logical argument is the average anti-gun advocate isn't worried about the drug addict killing them with their OD.

But they never seem to grasp the logic that bans don't work.  The drugs in the report are already illegal to buy and use, yet gun bans are being pushed as hard as ever.
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.
