On Saturday, around 1:44 a.m., officers responded to an armed burglary at a gym in Mapunapuna.

Police reported that two male suspects wearing black hoodies were armed with AR-15 rifles and pointed them at gym members as they entered the facility.

The 35-year-old gym owner brought out his own firearm and confronted the two suspects.

Wait - and they didn’t arrest the owner?

Where am I now - Wyoming?

This is amazingly encouraging.

The owner is my kind of man or woman.  Hopefully it's not something else. ::)

But anyway, this is how it should be, and in my opinion if more people are like the above, incidents like these would be close to zero.

Criminals are cowards.  Even the playing field and they don't want to play.

edited to add:  re-read the article and the owner was a man.  But I'd bet a woman would do the same.

An arrest can come later.

I'm srs.  HPD will record facts/info and then the prosecutors office can decide if a law was broken by the victim or not.

Some info that I've gathered:

This wasn't a weight lifting gym, but a boxing/muay thai type gym.  So a ring, bags, gloves, etc...

It's not uncommon for weightlifting gyms that are corporate to be open 24 hours a day.  Mom n pop weight lifting gyms, I don't know of any that are open 24 hrs here.

I don't know of any boxing/muay thai type gyms that are open 24 hours.

It isn't uncommon for a mom n pop gym owner to also sleep/live at the gym.
It isn't uncommon for a mom n pop gym owner to have a bbq/beers/cigars after gym closing with friends/family.

My speculation: This gym isn't open 24 hrs.  Owner and freinds were having friday pau hana and this happens often here.  Robbers came cause they knew this.  So it wasn't a random robbery.

This story is weird.  At first I thought who robs a gym?  Then realized a lot of these small local gyms deal with cash.  But this was classified as a burglary not a robbery, which means there may have been a different motive.  Love triangle?  Drug dealing?  The competition?

Yep.  At 1:44 in the morning, they aren't holding regularly scheduled classes.  Yet, there were "gym members" there that the perps pointed their guns at.  Members? Or employees?  Or "associates?"

The address of that place is:
        Iron Kingz
        851 Mapunapuna St, Unit D
        Honolulu, HI 96819

There's another business with a similar address:
        MyMassage808
        851 Mapunapuna St, Ste D
        Honolulu, HI 96819

I found that interesting.  Who knows?
