Personally,  if there is a banging on my house late at night, I will investigate with a gun.

It wouldn't be a thrill if there were no risks.  Some people lose at the game.

Recent Incidents & Shootings

• Houston, Texas (October 2026): A man in a Halloween costume was shot and left in critical condition after he mistakenly tried to enter the wrong apartment in a Greater Uptown complex late at night, rattling the doorknob and kicking the door frame while claiming it was his home. The resident inside, fearing an intruder, opened fire once the man tried to push his way in. Police noted no charges were filed immediately as self-defense laws applied.
• Vancouver, Washington (October 2026): Darren Goen grabbed his firearm after a group shattered his door frame during a viral door-kick challenge while he was watching TV. He did not fire, and police warned that the prank mimics actual home invasions and puts participants at severe risk of being shot.
• Statesville, North Carolina (January 2026): A teenager was shot in the leg after a group playing "ding-dong ditch" drove through a neighborhood. Homeowner Craig Steven Mason was arrested and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.
• Green Township / Starvue Drive, Ohio (April 2026): A homeowner, Jarvis Godfrey, fired a .45-caliber handgun with a green laser at teenagers who allegedly kicked his front door. Bullets struck nearby homes and a vehicle; Godfrey was arrested and charged with weapon discharge offenses.
• Frisco, Texas (July 2025): A homeowner named Damon Wolfe was charged with three counts of aggravated assault after firing three shots into a car carrying teenage boys who played a door-knock prank.
• Fredericksburg / Spotsylvania, Virginia (May 2025): 18-year-old high school senior Michael Bosworth was shot and killed (and another teen wounded) after a group of teens played a late-night ding-dong-ditch prank. Homeowner Tyler Chase Butler was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
• Houston, Texas (August 2025): 11-year-old Julian Guzman was shot in the back and killed while running away from a "ding-dong ditch" prank. The homeowner, Gonzalo Leon Jr., was arrested and charged with murder.

The "game" is supposed to be knocking on doors or ringing the doorbell, then running away/hiding.  It was a nuisance -- an annoyance that immature idiots got a giggle out of.

Today, they kick the door as hard as they can to terrorize the residents, and then run.  They are making the sounds one might expect during a home invasion.  Sometimes they don't start running fast enough if they don't think anyone heard them the first time.

The stakes were raised by the "players," yet the people who react accordingly are the criminals?
The reasonable man adapts himself to the world;
the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself.
Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.

Precisely.

A legal system that has slouched into (in some places, has systematically become) biased in favor of the safety and rights of perpetrators over those of citizens/victims, is now predictably leading to ever greater provocations on the part of the criminal classes - they see their empowerment.

Hence, madness like street takeovers, flash riots & mayhem, and attempted home invasions, etc.

Police only exist to file reports/interview victims - after the fact.

Such a system only produces criminals, an endless stream of victims, and ultimately, the collapse of law enforcement itself, as people take the law into their own hands and view the police seeking to target THEM, as the enemy.

This is is where Europe is now, except there, citizens are at the mercy of both criminals AND the state.

When the police come and ask me why the kids all have broken shins, I'll just tell them I wanted them to stop kicking my door.

I'll just tell them, same like when you shoot in self defense.  Except instead of shooting, you keep hammering away with your baseball bat until the threat is gone.
Sometimes you gotta know when to save your bullets.
