Storing bulk purchases

If you were wondering, 1000 rounds of 8mm Mauser do fit into one Cabela's dry box woth careful packing. However, it is far more weight than the dry box is designed for. If you lift by the handle, the sidesseparate and the whole thing creaks alarmingly.  So i'll be buying more ammo cans before I break open the second tin.

Why open the tin? It is really thin walled, not at all suitable for stacking. Plus, the footprint is an odd size, doesn't fit in with the existing Jenga tower of ammo cans and cardboard cases.

I'm thinking 4 .30 cal cans is the way to go rather than 2 .50 cal.  They fit perfectly across the smaller can, so no need to put separators between rows.

Turns out that nothing beats steel ammo cans!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

Ive been wanting to get a metal ammo can for a few boxes of misc ammo just to keep them out of the weather but the only place on the Big Island I know of that has them is hilo surplus store. If anyone knows another source in kona feel free to share!

My only question on those older ammo cans is the integrity of the seal with their age...

Jenga!  LOL!

If the seals are cracked and crapped out then toss em and run a nice thick bead of the best waterproof silicone caulking you can find.  some people coat the can lip with oil as a release agent and then close the lid to make a form fitting seal.  I think the stuff is flexible enough to let it cure as a bead and then mash it closed after.  Haven't tried it yet but did work on an outside job box, nice tight seal.
Assault Rifle? What I have here is an Anti-Assault Rifle.

The seal can be revived if still in one piece...Clean it with a damp cloth and apply some Pam cooking spray (or any non-petroleum based oil) with a cotton swab. Just let it sit for a few minutes and wipe away the excess. Most of the "cracking" is just oxidation on the rubber and should wipe right off leaving a soft/working seal.

Does pork based work too?
