Badger Ordnance Zero Cant Base
« on: August 01, 2013, 09:21:09 PM »
So I picked up my first bolt action rifle (700 LTR, 308)  :D, courtesy of the awesome OGC sale last week , and now planning for the glass.  When I was at OGC today to pick up the rifle, I asked about scope bases and they suggested the Badger base.  When I asked about 20 MOA cants, they recommended, based on my 20" barrel length, the zero cant base.  I've been reading up on scopes and bases the last couple of weeks and what I generally find is most people recommend the 20 MOA, not necessarily because they're currently shooting at long distances, but more for the JUST IN CASE they need it for long distances.  Question for you experts is, did I cut myself short and should I have just gone with the 20 MOA base?  I honestly can't see myself shooting anywhere but Koko Head, however, if I were to shoot at Puuloa, would I have a problem?  I understand that the base is one part of the equation and the scope will also have a range of MOA/MILS to consider.  I'm also seriously considering a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15 or possibly a Vortex PST 4-16.

Mahalo for any input!

Well up to 600 yards at Puuloa I'm up about 18 MOA from my mech. zero on my AR15 20" barrel pushing an 80 grainer at about 2700 fps. Thats about average on the conditions at Puuloa.
They haven't opned up the 1000 yd line yet to civie shooters so I dont know if a 20 MOA cant will help.
I think you should be fine with the 0 cant Badger

Thank you guys for the input.  I will keep the zero cant base.   Any input on rings?

I saw imku's scope for sell, and it is quite tempting, however I want more magnification.  If I needed a scope for my AR, I would have definitely jumped on that.

The scopes that you mentioned have alot of differences,  one of the things to look for when looking for a scope it the amount of internal adjustment that the scope offers.   From what I understand the NF almost has double that of the Vortex.  Sec equipment had some NF scopes in stock last time I was there.   The NF you mention will give you more than enough elevation to shoot long distances.  For rings are you asking for recommendations on ring height or ring brands?

btw:  thanks for the plug Macsak

Off the top of my head, I don't remember the difference in MOA except the NF had 100 total MOA.  The reason for the Vortex is because of many positive reviews online and also price.  My first choice is a Nightforce, but it's hard for me to justify the cost.

As for the rings, mostly brands.  I think when it's time to buy the scope, hopefully the shop would provide the correct height recommendations.  Looking on other forums, seems Badger rings are top knotch as well.

I also own 2 vortex scopes and I have nothing bad to say about them at all.   They are, IMO priced very well for the amount of features they have.  I way overestimated btw,  the Vortex pst 4-16x50 has about 75 MOA of total elevation travel.  So half that and you have about 38MOA to dial up.  As far as rings go, I haven't used them long enough to comment on durability,  but the Badger rings are nice.

If you are going to be shooting at long ranges go with the NF . I had the 3.5-15x50 mlr on my rem700 with an accuracy international zero can't rail , 20 moa badger rings . It would shoot at 1k very well . Maxed out the scope at  1500 yrs . I know NF are a bit high in price but to me IMO worth every dime if you use it .

I went down to OGC on Saturday to check out their NF selection.  Boy, those scopes feel very well built.  I'll have to put away some dough every month to make that payment!  The more I held it, the more I wanted it.
