http://248shooter.com/index.php/obamas-new-executive-order-will-kill-the-110-year-old-civilian-marksmanship-program/     :grrr:

obama is trying to bypass congress and ban the reimportation of military weapons. another one of his "common sense" laws that might sound good to most people on paper but are just hurting us and other law abiding citizens.

"President Obama’s newest enemy in the fight against illegal guns is the Civilian Marksmanship Program. This 110 year old program was founded in 1903 to ensure that  soldiers returning from war would be able to keep their skills up to date incase they ever be called on again. The program returned obsolete rifles from outside our borders back to the States for Americans to use.
What this actually does is stop old and obsolete Pre-Vietnam era weapons such as M1 Carbine and M1 Garand. There are no data indicating any of the weapons involved in homicide were imported surplus military rifles. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s homicide crime statistics, rifles accounted for only 323 deaths out of 12,664 homicides in 2011, the most recent data set provided by the FBI.
The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is highly regulated to control the distribution of obsolete military firearms.  Not only do participants have to comply with all state and federal laws and go through a background check before getting their guns through an FFL dealer.   They also have to be a member of the Civilian Marksmanship Program shooting club, which would make it very difficult for anyone else to make use of the program. The only group how is being made exempt from this import ban is museums. Clearly the president is not concerned about crime here. These are not the types of weapons used in robberies or school shootings these are not fully automatic military grade weapons. These are Curio’s and Relics collected by family members and shot at marksmanship contests.

We urge you all to share this article to show the true intention of this administration. It is to disarm the American people, make affordable weapons un attainable, and limit your ability to preserve our heritage.

UPDATE:
There is already a petition on Whitehouse.gov to RETRACT the executive order against the re-importation of U.S. military firearms.

click the above link and vote now to preserve our historical weapons and our rights to reasonably priced american rifles.

Done!
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

keep bumping the thread when you sign so it stays near the top of the recent threads. that way all the members can see it in case they havent yet.

ive been slacking on ordering a rifle from the CMP. i couldnt decide on an m1 carbine or garand. really wanted both but thats not realistic for me since i dont have any other guns in either caliber.

i hope the program stays alive!

I have signed the petition,  however, I have heard that the cmp was not going to get these surplus rifles anyway. Also, ive heard that these rifles are probably well used and beat-up. But still these, at the right prices would be awsome to rebuild and use or save for posterity.

Signed as well. The whole program is not even operated by the government. There's a 501(c)(3) - nonprofit - corporation put together to handle the program called "Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice & Firearms Safety." Other than providing surplus rifles, the US government provides nothing to this corporation. Shutting it down will not have any meaningful effect in the ways the pro gun control people want, so it is nothing but political theater.
