Yes, you are right.    The short term value definitely drops.  Anyone who buys firearms as a short term investment is more than likely to lose their shirt.

In the long term, however, as models change, values can go up.   I have a S&W model 66 which has a counterbored cylinder & pinned barrel.   It is worth more now than when it was originally purchased in 1978 (not by me). Or think about pre-reminginton marlins, or pre-64 Winchesters.   No one thought they were buying a collectors item at the time, just a gun.

Not being contentious at all.   Your point about the classifieds is right on the money and will hopefully help set people's expectations.   If you bought during the panic, your best bet is to hold those firearms and maintain them until either another panic or they appreciate over time.

From Belloq in Raiders of the lost Ark: "Look at this. It's worthless - ten dollars from a vendor in the street. But I take it, I bury it in the sand for a thousand years, it becomes priceless".

Not going to bitch about prices being unfair and what not, as I wholeheartedly believe that if you do not like what is posted in classifieds, and if the seller does not like your offer, you simply go away. But I will acknowledge that contrary to popular belief these days, firearms depreciate in value, just like cars, the minute you step out the door. It may not be as substantial, but they lose value nonetheless. And used firearms depreciate at an even faster rate. News to those who don't know: the craze is over, prices and availability are starting to stabilize, and if you were panic buying and/or looking to capitalize on it, sorry it didn't work out for you and you missed your chance to make some money.

Just out of common courtesy, I will offer you this advice: unless the firearm is deemed of historical or sentimental  value, is extremely rare, or the demand is astronomical, no one in their right mind (who is well versed in purchasing firearms) is going to buy a gun for the price you bought it at, unless it fits the categories above. Out the door, it loses value; with each subsequent shot, it loses value; with extended wear and tear, it loses value. So don't be surprised if no one is interested in buying your firearm well within a few hundred dollars of the asking price, as many are genuinely considering these factors. When selling ones firearms, Its always safe to predict that you will take a loss.

Moral of the story is: Don't get all butt hurt when people make you offers you don't like, especially when they are the ones who do the research and know what the firearm is truly worth.

you forget that this is Hawaii, the original home of the morons which think their shit is worth more used then brand new!  These morons in the classified section which think their guns are made out of solid gold are the same which try to sell their busted ass cars for more then new when most people wouldn't pick them up on craigslist for free.  You think your glock gen 2 or 3 is worth 550 bucks when you can get a new gen4 for the same price?  then you must be a 2a classified seller!

I think most of these guys bought the guns trying to rip people off if the gun ban went in to effect.  I think that people should be able to tell others about what a bad deal some of these guns are so they don't get suckered in to buying a piece of crap for much more then it is worth.

I agree, therefore I don't buy nor waste my time with offers. Anyone ever heard of Blue Sky imports?...and some people wonder why they can't get any $$$ for their firearms.
I remember in 2A's infancy one member would post ridonkulous offers then start calling people out. And people wonder why there is animosity on these forums...
On the other hand, this is a free market and people can sell at what ever price they want - then the market will ultimately determine the price. Buyers, sellers, spectators - quit bitching, pack up your ego and move on. Go to the range shoot some targets.
I can sell at what ever price I want, I can offer to buy at what ever price I want.

Some get more offended when one posts a link to a new model of the basically the same rifle the seller has for sale.  Whooptie doo your used rifle has the mall ninja aftermarket parts.

Simple rule of economics: If someone doesn't want your product, you simply drop the price or accept the offer. Obviously sellers are trying to make some type of money, which is why they are selling the product to begin with. Just don't be disappointed if you go in with high hopes and get shot down because you made a bad investment that has depreciated in value.

Very true, don't try and play the market if you can't afford to take a loss.

I feel the same way.

When I sell, I post what I think is a fair price.

If it doesn't sell, I lower the price.

Everything I ever list sells.

To me that means I am selling at a fair price.

It cracks me up when people list their stuff at stupid prices.

I understand though, gotta try.

The reality though is that if you list at a very high price, people are going to let you know.

Don't get all bent out of shape.

What pisses me off is when some dipshit feels the need to run to the rescue of every over priced auction poster.

If you're not selling and you're not a potential buyer, pull your thumb out of your ass, pull your other thumb out of your mouth and switch.

I would just like to add.
A spray paint job does not add value. It is stupid. Don't paint guns. Especially 3,000 dollar rifles. It's like painting a BMW with a roller. Nobody is going to pay msrp for a used gun with a back yard paint job. In fact, paint does not belong on civilian firearms unless its mounted on a tank.
That is all.

We need to change the rules so that kingkeoni can make one smartassed remark per overpriced listing. For my entertainment.

Selling price is different than asking price.  Selling price implies the item sold.  Asking price is what it is listed at.  What gets me is how worked up people get over something they are not even interested in.  It is one thing if you are looking for a Mossberg shotgun and some guy's price is out of whack. It is another thing if you are not looking for one and get all bent our of shape because you feel someone is trying to rip people off.  That is the way it is everywhere.  You can ask whatever you want for something but what you get is not necessarily what you were asking for.  I really don't care how much a guy is asking for something that I am not interested in in the first place.  If you aren't looking for a Raven pistol, why should you care what one is selling for?
It is what it is.
