The base price of the Dillon 550B is $439.95 while the Dillon XL 650 is $566.95.

I am curious... is there any reason why one should not get the XL650 instead?

I would not only because having to manually index the press forces me to stay more focused on the entirety of the reloading operation. Auto index, to me anyway, could get away from you if you are not very very careful.

From all things I have read about reloading everyone says it is ver dangerous.

Absolutely true about auto indexing. It can get away from you quickly. Especially for a newbie.
Not terribly dangerous though.... More like terribly annoying.
The best way to clear a progressive press jam is to remove all the shells from the machine and look to see what exactly went wrong.
Then look at each shell to see what needs to be finished. Then finish each one individually.
The shells to look out for are the ones that almost look finished but are not.
1-The bullet looks almost seated but not quite all the way.
2-The bullet is completely seated but not crimped yet.

Clearing a jam takes some time, thought and patience. Oft times the problem is not obvious.
I could write an entire thread about stuff that goes wrong on a progressive.

My brother has the Dillon 750 with all the bells and whistles... literally.
I went with a Reading Turret press and purchased 2 extra turrets for other cal set ups. I really don't think I'll be doing much pistol reloading, maybe some 9 mm and 357 but what I really want is accuracy in my rifle loads. I messed around with a Lee single stage and its fine but I figure the turret is kinda between that and progressive  a little easier to swith out cals + the Reading is beefy like a single stage. I also stay away from digi scales. A good beam scale doesn't drift.
I just bought a Hornady L&L .50 to start reloading for my big gun. I haven't tried it yet but it should be fun.

I'd be interested in a Dillon 750.

Dillon doesn't make a 750 press unless he was referring to their tumbler

Have you considered the hornady lock n load progressive press? I have good experience with it.

I am in dire need of a turret. Would you consider selling one of your spares? :shaka:

I have the 650 which I got from WGS. Haven't loaded anything yet. I'm just finishing setting up my loading bench. I will admit the 650 was expensive to set up all the extra tool heads for calliber changes. But from what I see just setting it up I like the quality and the customer service.
