Silhouette range
« on: January 21, 2011, 09:09:58 PM »
Aloha everyone,

Tomorrow our Sunday i am thinking about going to the silhouette range.  I am newbie to Kokohead and have only been to the bulls-eye side .  How is the crowd there on the weekends?  Is there many people were it can be difficult to get a shooting lane?    Anyone been there recently and actually know if 10 rounds is allowed ?   I have never shot steel targets before so I am not sure what to expect, i am assuming to look out for a ping sound to confirm a hit.  From the pictures they look like not swinging metal targets.  Any information on your experience there would be appreciated.

Look for the ping, there are no lanes, more just "elbow space" requirements.  Earlier you go, less people to deal with.  Have fun!

Aloha everyone,

Tomorrow our Sunday i am thinking about going to the silhouette range.  I am newbie to Kokohead and have only been to the bulls-eye side for my NRA pistol class.

No swingers, just a bunch of random crap stuck out there for you to plink at.
Relax, I've banned myself..

Look forward to a great time!

1.  Yes, 10 rounds is allowed.  If in doubt, look for the engraved sigh with the range rules, posted near the sign-in booth.  Actually, look for that anyway!

2.  They charge $5 to shoot there.  One fee, good for all day long.

3.  There are a few swingers.  The majority of the targets are set on the ground (or on rails) to be knocked over.  During periodic cease-fires, shooters go out to reset them.  If you are shooting, you should go out to help reset!  It's just common courtesy.  And feel free to scowl at the rude folks who are knocking them down but not helping to set them back up.

4.  Hearing a 'ping' can be challenging when the range is active, especially if you're shooting small caliber guns.  However, you can often see a strike as well.

5.  Next to the booth where you sign in and pay is a closet.  Inside, there are carpet squares for mats, carpet-wrapped 4x4 chunks for shooting supports, and free-standing wire bras catchers.  These are there for all shooters to use.

6.  As was said earlier, there are no lanes.  Just one long bench.  It does get crowded, but there's no predicting when.  I typically go around 10am on SUndays.  Last time I went, there were less than a dozen shooters the whole day.  The time before that, I spent the whole day rubbing elbows with other shooters.

7.  If you ask, they will let you set your own targets at 25 yards.  Just be sure that you police any mess when you leave.

have fun!

Didn't know I could set my own targets at 25 yards there, thanks for that Tom!

Checked  it out, and i notice some people bringing black spray paint to paint the steel.  I am wondering if I am allowed to do this as well and if there is only certain targets that allow painting?   Thanks everyone for the good info.   I am pretty impressed with the xd40 4inch service model I managed to hit the targets all the way in the back row with my non dominant hand. I wonder how the xdm will perform with its match barrel?.

Painting allows shooters to see fresh hits on the steel and is encouraged. 25 yard targets cannot be steel due to the chance of ricochet. Whatever you put out, you clean up. Everyone wears eye and hearing protection to include spectators.
