If the suv driver was paying attention and was being a defensive driver he wouldnt have hit that dumb reckless biker and this whole shit storm probably wouldn't of happend.
But obviously he has poor judgement
When you are swarmed by a hundred wreckless bikers circling, brake checking, and darting in and out, back and forth, around and around your car on a freeway, it's not that easy to drive defensively. While you're distracted watching 10 bikes speed up to your left, 10 more are on the right and another 5 slowing in front.
Hindsight is 20/20. Maybe we all have an opinion of what he SHOULD have done, but when that happens and you aren't expecting it, normal defensive driving skills don't always provide the correct answer to the situation.
I really can't remember being told in my high school driving classes, "If you are ever swarmed by bikers ignoring the rules of the road, driving too close to you and themselves, erratically speeding up and slowing down, passing, circling, and brake checking, here's all you have to do ..."
Maybe I missed that day?
My point is, this is not a normal situation. How people react will be based on the individual, not defensive driving techniques. I pride myself on having excellent situational awareness and assessment skills, but nobody is infallible. If you misinterpret the situation, then your decisions will be less than optimal.
What should he have done? It's too easy to answer that question now, after the fact and in front of a computer screen with no wife and child to consider ...
