Is anyone on here a resident of the area served by this board? Having residents to represent 2a issues articulately and attend this would be productive.
Also, I agree with comments that moving the line up makes no sense if ricochets are a concern... Shooting a target at 100yards.. The round will pass right through the cardboard and hit the backstop not much differently than if the target was at 200 or 300 yards. You can actually argue that having the targets closer to the backstop is safer because in the event they are deflected, by say a post, an equivalent angle deflection closer to the backstop would result in less overall deflection. In other words, moving the targets towards the backstop is actually safer. Don't get me wrong, I don't think this is a big deal, but this is probably not intuitive to the neighborhood board. In their mind if the problem is having bullets go too far - the solution is to shoot at something closer. While we understand the absurdity of this, they evidently don't. Perhaps some graphics would help explain this? Get an expert to testify?
Range is not the issue, the type of target potentially is. While I think this Greg guy is making stuff up and do not believe the rounds he carries in came from the range.. One certainly would expect a higher probability of ricochet with angled heavy steel targets. So another way to make the case for safety would be to volunteer clearer guidelines for safe metal targets. Require they angle down slightly, for example. I realize this is already briefly mentioned on KHSC website, but perhaps these two points need to be clearly articulated to the board and homeowners in a way they can understand. To be clear, I think the existing targets are fine - this needs to be communicated.
Thoughts?
Folks it's understandable that these things are frustrating but venting on here won't result in action, we need to meet the concerns of the board members and educate them on how KHSC is safe, in language they understand.
