Roll of magnetic sheet
« on: December 01, 2013, 09:29:45 AM »
Hey all anyone knows if there is a place locally that sells magnetic sheets or rolls ?

I plan to line my steel  gun locker  so I can stick my pistols/magazines instead of buy hangers or racks.

Has anyone actually done that?  Seems to me the gun weights would be too much, especially if the steel of the gun safe is "sucking up" the magnetic fields from the back sides of the sheets.  And an awful lot of guns are largely plastic or possibly  nonmagnetic stainless.  Hmmm.   Let me know if it works.  Tell me if I'm wrong, please.  I can see it working for unloaded mags, maybe.

If not, I'd try stronger magnetic blocks, the kind that can hold tools like wrenches and such...

I've tried it and the sheets are not strong enough to retain the weight of the firearm. You'd probably be best served with neodymium magnets but they are expensive.

You're begging for dings on the guns with neo magnets,  The gun will snap onto the magnet with considerable force and probably damage the finish or even dent the metal.  Probably OK for plated tools like wrenches and maybe magazines.  But not for guns.

Some larger neo magnets even have warnings about getting body parts between the magnets and iron when they clack together.  And if you cushion the magnet with plastic or some such, that just reduces the holding power.

Magnets for holding guns?

Not for me.  A gun isn't a pair of pliers or a screwdriver.  Good luck with the idea, though.

I remember getting sheets from Best Signs back in the day....

I would trim the magnet to fit racing decals for my car.....

You know, so my car would go FASTER........... ;D

Still toying with the idea and looking at other options. Things I came across so far....
1. Most of my guns are stainless steel so it have little iron for them to stick.
2. Magnetic power of the sheets is distributed into the safe thus reducing holding power.
3. Guns eventually will become magnetized and becomes a magnet themselves.

One could easily put a layer of vinyl on the magnet to prevent some scratches once first used.  But over time it will collect shavings/debris.

Would something like this work?

I have to agree about the firearms will be somewhat magnetic over time.  I wrench for a living, I have these magnet tool holders in various drawers in my tool box.  Some tools have some sort of magnetic properties even though it was not stored on a magnetic holder.

Try look around on the personal defense network website. On an episode on best defense they featured a new product, one exactly what your looking for. It was a magnetic strip you could screw into drywall and it would hold your gun. They even made a larger/stronger version for rifles. He showed him storing one above the bedroom door. I.forget what its called but its another possobility to look into.
