interesting mantra of shedding weights instead of adding. I thought that more weight would help stabilize position

The rules of F-TR require the rifle (only .308Win or .223Rem) and all attached accessories, including bipod, scope, and any heat defectors or slings, come in at under 18.18 pounds.  (not including the rear bag)

Thus the reason of trying to shed as much ancillary weight as possible, while keeping the heaviest profile barrel.  F-TR is the more challenging of the classes, as the ballistics of .308 and .223 is limited, especially at 1000 yards.
