Has this happened to you folks?
« on: January 04, 2014, 03:37:07 PM »
Hello,

Have you folks had defective ammo before? I went to the range yesterday fired some rounds from my glock 33 and noticed 2 rounds would not chamber, they kind of stove piped. Then I notice the bullet was pressed too far into the shell. Then I noticed a couple of cases that were split. I also noticed what appeared to be small pieces of shell melted/stuck to the chamber part of my barrel. It cleaned up except for a small speck  1. Is this from defective ammo? 2. I haven't seen any damage but could this have damaged my barrel? 3. How do I clean that melted spec off of my barrel safely. I have already contacted Winchester and am waiting for a reply, should I contact glock too?  Thanks folks!!!

I've had split necks in 223  but not in handgun calibers.
I'd stop shooting until you can identify the problem. I'm not familiar enough with Glocks to offer insight. Right now it is either the gun or the ammo. The obvious solution is to switch ammo and see if the problem is recreated.

Homemade or Factory Ammo...

If homemade most likely those are necked down 40S&W casings.  in that case that is why the cases split.
Not crimped properly also.  If they are not seating it could be the cases are not trimmed to the proper length.
IF factory ammo contact them ASAP!

What kind of brand are they? I actually had this happened to me back in Cali, but it was in 45acp 230gr HP and it was in my Colt Wiley Clapp, I contacted lucky gunner and Hornady and they gave me a refund and 250rnd of 45acp ammo. It's not the gun it's the ammo! Sometime they pump out so much ammo out from the demon hole to keep up with high demands that their machines F#%Ks up sometimes.

Thank you for the input, it's factory Winchester white box ammo.

I had a defective winchester round, Looking through the scope of my rifle I picked a cartridge up, dropped it in and tried to close the bolt.. no go. Tried again still no go, Pulled the round out and looked at it and the neck was all deformed and the bullet was in slightly sideways.

I emailed them about it just to let them know and they called me a few times but I never bothered calling back. To their credit they tried to contact me via phone and mail so clearly they wanted to follow up on the issue.

Looks like defective ammo to me.    Try another brand to make sure its not a chamber issue  get the barrel checked for damage,  take those back to where you bought it from and get a refund, contact Winchester about the issue, maybe they need to recall.

its a commom problem with the 357sig round.
not much case neck to get a good crimp.
when reloading this caliber, bullet seating depth
and crimp needs to be good to go.

Hey again, thanks for the advice! How should I go about getting the barrel checked? Where should I get it done at and do you guys know how much it will run to get it checked. Im pretty sure my glock has a life time warranty.

Disassemble and inspect the slide and barrel. Is the barrel clean? Unmarred? Look down the bore. Do you see dark rings? Those are bulges in the barrel from lodged bullets being shot free. A new barrel costs money. At the armorer’s cost, a Glock barrel runs $95 to $125, with compensated barrels running up to $140. Aftermarket Match barrels can run up to $200. If the barrel is bulged, bargain hard, for a replacement won’t be cheap.

Thanks Darmok,

If the barrel is damaged, im not to angry about the price (if I even have to pay out of pocket) but I would be pissed as the new barrel would have a different serial number from the other parts in my gun :(

Re: Has this happened to you folks?
yes
But not in 357 sig caliber.
About 25 yrs ago I played with a wildcat cartridge called 38-45 Clerke.
It is a 45acp necked down to 9mm. Not unlike your 357 sig.

Two problems with this concept immediately popped up:
1- insufficient neck tension to hold the bullet in place causes bullet setback when the round hits the feedramp.
2- Split necks due to the work hardening to form the neck.
So it does not surprise me that you have such a problem.

In your case, I believe the ammo does not have sufficient neck tension to hold the head when hitting the feed ramp.
Some cartridges are having the bullet set back causing extremely high pressure due to reduced case volume.
Because the pressure is too high on those rounds, you get split shells.
Another problem you have is failure to chamber. Again, this may be due to the round hitting the feed ramp hard and actually deforming the neck on the way in.

The ammo may be defective. But the problem could also be magazine-related. If the round is taking a nose-dive into the feed ramp instead of pointing up into the chamber, I think it could cause those problems too.
Make sure you are using the correct magazines and number them and take note of magazines that have feed problems.

I do not own a 357 sig, so all of this is just a wild guess.

Not fully releasing the slide when charging the pistol can cause feeding issues.  Do not ride the slide forward.  Either slingshot it back and do a total release of the slide, or just use the slide release.  Trying to reduce the amount of "forward slam" when letting the slide go forward is a bad thing.

Hope that helps, too.
