Selling a handgun to the US shipping cost?
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:55:24 AM »
I want to sell a handgun to the US  and need to get a shipping cost for the buyer.   I'm going to use a FFL here to handle the transfer.  Does the FFL give me the shipping cost or do I work that out on my own?  Any recommendations on FFL's that are easy to work with for this transfer.

Aloha,
Chuck

if you do it thru an FFL they can be shipped USPS.
But you pay their fees and whatever they want to charge you on their shipping.

If you ship it yourself , you can only ship it via private carrier and play their rules.

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?

A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

I typically just let the FFL tell me the shipping cost.

They'll use their preferred method of shipment.

OGC is an easy gun store to work with.

Just let them figure the cost and pay them accordingly.

FFL can use USPS to ship handguns

Handguns — e.g., pistols, revolvers, and other firearms capable of being concealed on the person — are nonmailable UNLESS mailed by a licensed manufacturer of firearms, or a licensed dealer of firearms, or an authorized agent of the federal government or government of a state, territory, or district, and ONLY when addressed to a person in one of the following categories for use in the person’s official duties AND upon filing the required affidavit or certificate, as applicable (see DMM 601.11.1.3–7):
