Associates defend man who had gun in school

Quote
Dwayne Ferguson spent more than a decade advocating for nonviolence and peace in the streets of Buffalo.

He was a well-known face in the movement for the SAFE Act, the state law that made carrying a gun on school property a felony. He was also a familiar presence in the hallways of the city’s Harvey Austin Elementary School, where he worked in the after-school program and mentored students.

No one imagined that on Thursday he would show up at the school in possession of a gun, touching off an hours-long lockdown, search and ultimately his arrest on two felony charges.

Quote
The school received the call about 4:15 p.m. notifying staff that someone had entered the school with a gun. Brown and Brinkworth said it is not yet clear who placed the call. Around that time, 911 received two calls about the incident, prompting the school to go into lockdown and touching off a search of the building by police and SWAT team responders.

The initial search of the building turned up nothing, Brinkworth said.

It was not until police were patting down students so they could evacuate the school that they found the gun on Ferguson, Brinkworth said.

Ferguson was wearing it in a holster, and at no time during the lockdown did he notify police that he was carrying a weapon.

(Is that a gun in your pants, or are you excited about going to prison for 4 years?!)      >:D

Interesting that there is no mention of the firearm itself, and that if it was a semi-auto whether he had adhered to the 7 round maximum legal limit... if not, likely he just "forgot" he had put 8 or more in the magazine.

This just proves that these people are the worst type of hypocrites.

They are elitist scum, that feel THEIR wants or needs come before the needs of what they consider the unwashed masses. They are "special" and therefore shouldn't be held accountable nor should they be subject to, the laws they impose on the rest of us.

This has become the face of our government today. It's sad to say, but we'll have to forcibly cut this cancer from our society before our country can be what it once was.

I get the direction you're headed, but FYI:

On December 21, 2013, a federal judge struck down the 7 round limit originally contained in the SAFE Act.  The law again allows a 10 round magazine capacity.   So, hopefully Hawaii law makers are taking note should they ever decide to do the same.

I'd forgotten that Judge Skretny had ruled the magazine limit unconstitutional, while leaving the other provisions of the SAFE Act intact and in force. I found his reasoning to be somewhat illogical, or inconsistent, or at least confusing or confused. His justification (as I read and understand it) for returning the limit to 10 rounds was, at least partially, that law-abiding firearm owners limited to 7 rounds would be at a disadvantage in a self-defense situation against a criminal who had illegally filled his magazine with 10 rounds. What he seems to forget or avoid is the fact that criminals who have in all likelihood acquired their firearm illegally likely (or at least "possibly") would have the "standard" issue manufacturer's magazine, which in the case of most contemporary semi-auto pistols (1911s excepted) would be between 12 and 17 rounds. I don't know why, if he is going to bring up the disparity between law-abiding citizen magazine capacity, and criminal magazine capacity, he wouldn't have pointed out this obvious disparity, and, by the logic he employs to rule the 7 round magazine limit unconstitutional, then rule the 10 round magazine limit also unconstitutional. It's on appeal, so in a year or so some other judge will rule on it. I'm not expecting logic or consistency at any point.

I still find it curious that in the original story no mention of the specific firearm or number of rounds. Maybe the "forgetfulness" was going around.

How to carry a gun in a gun free zone:

1. Carry a gun in a gun free zone.

2. When the police come to arrest you, say "I forgot".
