Nice one!
Is this what they call a Vancouver Bull?
My dad got a huge one longtime ago in the '70s on a private property on the Big Island.

Yeah this is the 3rd time that I'll be eating some "free-range/forest" cattle meat.  Usually just make hamburger and stew meat.  Think we got close to 160-180 pounds off of that one, three full pillow cases and one half full, luckily we were close to the road about 100 yards thru the mud where we were hunting them.  You would think that something that large in the forest would be easy to find but to be honest they don't make a lot of noise.  One of the other guys in our group got one that must have been pushing 700 lbs.  In all out group got 5 and we got out about 800-900 pound of meat.  I'm not sure what the breed was but they all look like poi dog mixes in there browns, whites, black, mix black/white, mix brown/white, etc.

That looks like a Herford. I raised two of them when I was in 4-H as a youth. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hereford_(cattle)

DLNR lottery hunt up in the Hilo Forest Reserve.  So it was on public land but you needed to get a permit to hunt the cattle because they are not defined as a game animal.

If you get in on the lottery you get access from DHHL side which is a lot closer to where the cattle are.  If you are coming from saddle road 16 mile etc. You got about 2.5 miles of every terrain imaginable to walk through i.e. not fun at all.  Morita trail is well marked and is on the topo maps I took that trail once and it was something I would have to think really hard about doing again.

I used a .308, in the group that shot cattle we had 30-06, .270, 30-30 and 12g slug.  I don't recommend the 12g slug too much damage to the meat maybe it was just the shot placement but we found bits of lead all over.  The DLNR people mentioned that one group used compound bows too.

A few years ago my grandma up in waimea asked me to come up and take care of a few donkeys running around their ranch . Thank goodness it was flat terrain
