Nice.

What pH is your water? I got crap pH. Almost 9 one time I measured.

How deep is the cinder?

I have found not a lot of plants grow well in my system.

What siphoning method is yours? I am using loop siphon (just made using PVC elbows). Recently flow is crap because of roots; I am thinking to clear everything out in the next couple of weeks and do a "soft reset" (i.e., just reconfigure, but leave all the bacteria, etc. intact, not clean out the system).

I also have a ton of aphids to hassle with. (My system has been running 1+ years now).

The cinders are approximately 10 inches.
I haven't checked the ph level yet lol but every thing seems fine.
Every thing I've planted so far did well except lettuce gonna try a constant flow later.
Its an auto siphon took a few days to get it running right but its working now don't have to adjust anything.

30 gal tank
18 gal grow bed
black cinders
and yes that is moss growing on top.
I do not yet have a location with proper sun exposure, wind protection, and electrical connection so it sits in my garage which gets almost 0 direct sunlight.  Turns out these conditions are similar to where moss grows in the wild.  I collected patches of moss from the forest and laid them over the cinders.  interestingly, moss does not root so no soil is needed and the moss seems to survive with direct, intermittent exposure to water and minimal light.
nothin fancy but interesting what can grow.  I call it a "glorified fish tank filter" LOL  btw sometimes i put earthworms from the compost bin into the grow bed, they love the spaces between the cinders.
If you stay ready, you don't have to get ready.

You can consider grow lights but that will mean $$$ electricity, depending on how much wattage you give it.

Play around with mirrors made from mylar and cardboard. I had a funky setup once but now it seems I don't need it (I relocated everything to get as much sunlight as possible).
