Firearms Proficiency course
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:43:57 PM »
Aloha to all. I was looking over the requirements to apply for a CCW in the County of Maui and a Firearm Proficiency course is required. I know Maui does not have this course here so could anyone on Oahu give me some leads on connecting with someone that administers this course?

I doubt there are any, considering no one gives out CCW permits.  Do you have the course outline or requirements to be taught?

Actually my understanding is that a few retired law enforcement officers had taken the course on Oahu to met the requirements to CCW. I know also that some armed security personnel and couriers has to take this course. Some people don't realize but there are private citizens who are retired LEO that have CCW permits because of federal law allows it. I don't mind going through the motions and get this portion of the requirement done.

The State does not issue permits under LEOSA.

The requirements are set by their former agency under USC926

Huh?  So getting back to my original post.  I am looking for an agency, company, or certified personnel that can help me complete this Firearms Proficiency course.  If this requirement is needed to get a CCW in Maui I want to attempt to get this requirement fulfilled. It has been done before.  I just need some leads on talking to the right people.  Help!

Have you talked to Maui PD about the course. I do believe there were some retired officers that took that class on Oahu for LEOSA carrying. Is that what you are trying to get?

Call OGC. They offer a course to get the Arizona CCW license. Once you get that you can TRY to apply for the Hawaii license. Might give you a .00000001% better chance.
Google it cause every question is a dumb question.

Thanks for the responses. I talked to MPD and they said they didn't know of any courses I could take. I've heard Oahu has certified trainers and that a few retired LEO has taken the course in Oahu. I talked to an armed courier and he will let me know the instructor that they use.

I am unaware of anyone giving civilian based courses that are specific to meeting any ccw course requirements by any counties.  Oahu does do qualifications for armed security positions but this is not concealed carry, but armed guards and only while on official work related business.  As for retired Officers getting qualified under LEOSA requirements that is only done via the AG and for retired LE.  Civilians do not qualify for LEOSA so no courses are Offered there.

You need to get Maui PD to qualify what meets the course requirements and go from there.

Thank you Surf for your post. I did call MPD Firearms Records Division and they don't have any info on how to get the Firearm Proficiency course requirement fulfilled. I'll see what info I can come up with.
