What kind of hearing protection do you wear?
« on: May 19, 2011, 11:36:34 AM »
I was looking around at passive forms of hearing protection like the SureFire EP4 Sonic Defender and the Peltor Combat Arms Plugs and started wondering what everyone else wore.

What kind of hearing protection is your favorite? Plugs? Muffs? Electronic Muffs?

Do you have any favorites you'd recommend?

I'm really thinking about trying out the SureFire EP4s. Not bad for $15. Does anyone know how well they work and how long they last?

I have these Howard Leight's and love them, although I haven't really used anything else to compare besides foamies. Plus they are reasonably priced for electronic muffs. I have bad hearing to begin with so I like the Howard's because they help me hear people around me. Foamies block out too much sound.

I bought Surefire ones when they were on sale. I should've got medium size instead of large size. You only get to choose one size.

I have a big head so I figured I should get a large, but apparently my ears are not proportionate and the large hurts after only a little bit. I have stubby arms but wear large sized gloves.

There was one on sale on Midway, electronic ones for $22 or something. Got two of those. Haven't taken them out yet, but works pretty good when two people are in a small room, with one banging on pots and the other racking the slide and both marveling at how cool it is that it cuts out sound.

The sale is til May 31 I believe. Check it out!

I have almost zero experience with the electronic ones, i just use Peltors doubled with foamies.  I can barely hear someone who is talking right next to me.  Maybe this thread might inspire me to upgrade.

I have a pair of these, wore them for the 4 days of training in vegas -- no problems.  They are *AWESOME* imo!

It allows me to hear students when we are talking, however, if there is lots of gun fire (like there is at the pistol / range) it becomes a little bit more difficult to hear.  Most of the amplification cuts out and it just protects my hearing lol.

+1 on this. First experience using electronic ears, and gotta say, the difference is unbelievable. Not getting the same ones though...not yet anyway....not spending $50+ lol.

I have big ear holes so most of the plugs don't fit right for me.
Because of this I use electronic ear muffs.

If I'm firing a particularly loud caliber, I'll double up plugs and muffs.

I have used foamies for years because they offer the highest level of protection.

I've been taking more classes lately so I've gotten a pair of MSA Sordin electronics.  Yes you can hear the guys talking much better, but the protection is much less then that of foam.  I am still trying to decide how to go when I'm not taking a class, but the electronics for class for sure.

Foamies.  They are cheap, reliable, and effective.  I don't use muffs because they interfere with my use of longarms.  I don't like the ones with electronic amplification because on the range, they are constantly cutting out while others shoot, which makes it harder for me to hear what someone is saying.  Plus, I can keep dozens of spare pairs on hand in my range bag.

Does anyone else have a problem getting the foamies in and expanded correctly? I think I have to fiddle with them for 10 minutes before they are in correctly.

I usually just roll it in fingers and then insert it.

That's what she said.

Bwuaaaaahahaha.

BTT, I do the same thing. Just squeeze it and quickly jam it into my ear before it expands up. Then enjoy the sensation of my hearing slowly deafen.
