If it was allowed and I could conjure up anything out of thin air, I would choose an MP5SD and lots of spare mags.
I think, therefore I am armed.

One firearm? I guess it would have to be my Arsenal SGL 26-61 AK 47. Easy to maintain and it keeps on firing.

I'd love an M1 Scout.

First, that would really suck.

Second... dunno. Kinda a toss up between my 308 cetme, the Marlin 336 30-30 and the marlin 1894 44 mag.

All shoot lead with no issues. The cetme has the most power and capacity, is second in reliability only to the AK47 but its really heavy... and I'm not expecting to participate in a war anytime soon. The 30-30 (shooting lead) is about as powerful, is an easy rifle to take care of and weighs almost half as much. Only carries 7, though. The 44 is by far the easiest to reload for, though, and where I live I'm not really expecting to shoot more than 100 yards....

Its like trying to choose a favorite child: they are all such individuals! :)

Tough.

I wouldn't take the shotgun, actually. Very lead and powder inefficient compared to both 30's and the 44. I can cast and load a really fun round ball load but its a LOT of lead and a lot of powder. I also can't make good shot cups, while I can make .30 cal gas checks and the 44 doesn't need anything but bullet, primer, powder and casing...

Probably the 44. 11 rounds is (more than) enough and ease of reloading counts for a lot with me. No need for gas checks and I can make a bunch of different powders work for them in the lever action. Light, too.

Just one firearm? Normally I'd say AK, but I'll say AR since uppers aren't "firearms" and I can have several calibers for one lower.

For everything?

Probably something like one of those Marble Game Getters with a .22 RF or a small .22CF like the Hornet cartridge on top and .410 or, better, 20 ga on the bottom.  But with about 20" barrels.

No, not good for small meaty animals... if you want any meat left, and that's the problem with most of the choices in this thread.  Sure, you've got magazine capacity, but when the stomach growls, you only need one shot.

For Self-Defence?  A .410 1/5 oz slug at 1800 f/s isn't too bad... a 20 ga slug being better.  Of course, you only have two shots (upper and lower barrels), but the Bad Guy is also limited to only one gun for everything.*  You just gotta practice your reloading. :)

Just throwing that out there, bearing in mind you can only have one gun for everything.

And regardless of the fact that ARs are modular, you can bet your sweet bippy that if suchlike legislation occured, you would be limited to only one upper --enforcement problems aside.

Well since we're getting technical, the criteria for this choice is "one firearm in one caliber.
So all the guys who chose an AR with 20 different uppers and all the guys who chose a 2 caliber gun, failed.

One firearm, one caliber, one piece of equipment, one tool.

You're changing the rules in the middle of the game.  The initial premise was one firearm.  Just to be technical about it.   :shaka:

Would you accept a Mossberg 500 with three barrels (rifled slug, upland shorty, and waterfowl longy --with assorted  choke tubes) under your new premise?  It's still one firearm and one "caliber".

And not to go off-topic, but this illustrates the problem with a lot of proscriptive and prescriptive laws.   If you want to limit something, you'd better be specific about exactly what you mean.  Otherwise you end up with loopholes.

Ruger Redhawk  44 magnum.

Powerful and accurate
Compact enough to carry around. Can be easily concealed in a good shoulder rig.
Reduced loads for plinking or target shooting
Medium loads for home defense
Full power loads for hunting...even large game with the right loads
Shot loads for birds or pest control
Primer powered rubber or wax bullets for training kids to shoot
Sturdier than SW 29
Fairly common ammo
Can use home made lead bullets
What, Me Worry?

i think id reach for my marlin 94 in .44 too!  like you said 10 in the tube, easier and more cost effective to reload than rifle cartidges. i can grab the gun and a .50cal ammo can full of ammo and head for the hills.
oh and 250 yards is nothing with hot ammo. winchester 240gr only needs to be clicked up one notch on that weird marlin rear sight. fiocchi ammo needs to be moved up 5 clicks though. big difference between those two. i really want to try some home made reloads with the recommended maximum amount of powder in them. i think it would hit pretty much point of aim out to 300.

Ruger 10/22 hands down.

Reliable, cheep to shoot, accurate, you can carry lots of ammo if you needed to, quieter then other guns, easy to train others with.

While it may not be "humane" to take game with one it will work on anything up to and including medium game.
Don't be confused, I live in Washington.  Yes the state.

Mossberg 500 with 3 barrels:
Rifled slug barrel
26" multi-choke barrel
18.5" barrel.

1 gun, 1 caliber, plethora of applications.

Then I'd make the wife get an XD9 ( cause I don't think she can handle a .40 )

I'm in the AR-15 boat.  While it may not have the knockdown power to bring down large game, it can still bring down a small deer with a well placed shot, as well as a pig, again, well placed.  It's been known to be a great PDW and is accurate enough for distance relevant to personal protection and small game hunting.  It does incorporate "high capacity" mags and at the same time ammo isn't terribly heavy.  If you consider places that allow an SBR option, it's very maneuverable in tight spaces.  Great all around weapon, in my opinion.  Offers a nice balance between reliability, accuracy, weight and practicality.
