I'd take a long, hard look at something like the Ruger Gunsite Scout.  Keeping in mind that Jeff Cooper laid out that design for exactly the scenario described, and that he had more gun knowledge than anyone here, I think I'd be in good shape.  Detachable magazine, .308 caliber, and bolt action is about as reliable as it gets.

no frickin' fair!  as far as they concerned the lower is the gun so that's all that's registered therefore I can stick almost anything on it like a bolt action .50!  either way we ain't gonna be limited to one gun ever.  EVER!

I would definitely have to go with my AR-15.  Not only does it have many uses (flashlight, spotting scope, blunt force object, ...), it is also so scary, most people would either retreat rapidly at the sight of it or just fall over dead from the terror caused by a bayonet mount and pistol grip!

I would like to know a lot more about the Scout.  Accuracy, action handling, etc.  I know they recently came out with a slightly longer barrel version in stainless, very interesting.  The one M77 I handled decades ago felt like a loose rattling piece of junk.  Not a bolt gun guy, but could not believe how sloppy the bolt was as it was cycled.

Have been thinking of a detachable box magazine Remington or Savage .308, but the Scout might sway me if I found it had great long range accuracy.

Not giving up my LR308 in the meantime.  That rifle does everything the .223 AR does, and with far longer range capability and knockdown power.  I love shotguns, but really, past 50 yards, what good are they?  I would rather take my chances with the Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag I should never have sold. 

SCAR 17 with the modified lower.  Yes, it's too much gun for close range/small game, but if forced to choose, I'll take that over having too little gun for longer range/bigger game.

With current laws.  My AR-15.  Suitable for home defense, legal for hunting pig on island with the right powered loads (I dont do much hunting to begin with though), and even though ammo is pricier than it was a year ago, still cheaper than .308 so I could get my fun shooting in.

Unless of course we ever get to pass the CCW law in our favor.  Then it would be a handgun, maybe a glock 19 or 30sf.

I'd take a 9" AR-15 in .300 BLK with a SF762 SOCOM MINI.

I'd go for a AR10 in 308.  Can be used for close quarters/urban, hunting for most game, precision shooting up to 1000 yards, modular, able to gain fire superiority, rapid reloads, lots of components to reload.  Not the best in any of those, but not bad in any either.

Only downside is it's not a handgun, so you give up concealability.
