New Long Gun Permit Renewal Procedure?
« on: June 11, 2014, 10:50:47 AM »
I stopped by the local police station yesterday to renew my long gun permit since it was supposed to expire tomorrow.  I filled out the paperwork, showed gave my driver's license and shortly after got the DL back along with the little paper with phone number, date and license referral number.  I was told to bring in this same paper and my original birth certificate.  She went on to explain it is a new procedure.  I thought that was kind of strange.

Is this the new standard procedure for long gun permit renewal?  If so, curious as to what sparked this as I recall bring it in upon my initial long gun application.

What if one does not have the original?  Any other documents could take it's place like passport?

I skimmed through the HPD, MPD and the HRS 134, I could not find anything that states I need my birth certificate for long gun permit renewal.  Unless the HRS 134 part was changed recently as I was skimming through a copy I printed earlier this year.

Renewed mine in Feb 2014.  No documents other than old permit and drivers license required.

Sounds to me like they lost your prior paperwork. A certified copy of your birth certificate would probably work just fine.

I have always submitted my permit renewal paperwork with my social security number.

Yup, born and raised.

I stopped by the LGS to pick up some ammo and brought this up with the owner's wife.  She mentioned, it was most likely they did lose my previous paperwork.  She went on to mention, one of the forms for proof of citizenship was birth certificate, passport, and something else(I got distracted due to an incoming phone call).

I always thought, the drivers license was a plethora of information of the one pictured.  I guess I was wrong.

Applied for my renewal at HPD on 10 July.  No problems there & no mention of any rule changes or posted signs.

This is BS in any case.
In order to receive or renew your DL you have to show proof of citizenship, your DL should automatically be proof that you're a citizen. If you're not a citizen it should be noted on your DL.
This law has been in affect for some time now.
How the hell do they "lose" your paperwork in any case? Did a dog eat it? Is there a ghost or some sort of "magic" that causes properly filed paperwork to just "disappear"?
Maybe they just can't figure out that whole "alphabetical order" thing. Since the "lost" paperwork contains sensitive personal info, can they be held liable if an identity thief gets their hands on it?
HPD needs to start taking this responsibility a lot more seriously, this is crap.

Damn now I have to go dig for mine and probably order a copy when I can't find it.  Why can't they just take a passport?

Applied for renewal July 10th also, same story...no problem, only drivers license and old permit required.

When I was applying for my long gun permit in 2012, I had my identification ready and $16.50 exact change. When I got to the window the officer asked if this is a first time application. I was going to say yes then I remembered and told him I had a permit about 30 years ago. I didn't think he would even bother checking. He looked at my drivers license and opened a card file next to him and pulled out my application from the early eighties with my picture attached. It took him about 30 seconds. He gave me the forms to fill out and told me I don't have to pay anything since it's a renewal. I guess the old system is better than the new one.

Same exact thing happened to me when I applied in 2012 to purchase my first AR.  They pulled my records from 1984 when I brought my revolver in from Florida.

The last time I renewed my drivers licensed they required my birth certificate too, which was a first for me. I don't think it is just firearms, they are cracking down on, but any sort of formal permit.

Went to register a rifle I picked up in Nevada last week. First time with an out of state acquisition. Had to fill out the medical paperwork, psych background and the questionnaire in addition to the usual stuff. So odd.  I got the registration that day anyway and went home with the rifle.  Still trying to figure that one out.
