What would be the process if I did buy a gun from a website or a mainland company? Do I have to do some type of transfer? Looking into a new gun. Here's my three choices, Ak, shotgun, or 1903. A Kar98 or Mousingat would be nice too. I been seeing some compaines that end up with military surplus. For example SAMCO and Mitchells Mausers. Have anyone delt with any on these companies?
I've bought from SAMCO, but not Mitchell's. My SAMCO transaction was just fine.
To buy from a warehouse, or via an internet auction, at SOME point before they ship the gun, they need to see a copy of the actual license of the FFL to whom they are shipping it. In internet auctions, that step usuallyhappens after you win the bid. With warehouses, it usually happens before they take your credit card number. It may well be the very first thing they ask for.
So, before you start, get in touch with your friendly neighborhood FFL (I strongly recommend Al at Ready on the RIght) and say "Hey, I want to buy a gun, can I have a copy of your FFL?" Or alternately, "Hey, I want to buy a gun from SAMCO at this address, will you fax them a copy of your FFL on my behalf?"
Once SAMCO (or whoever) has a copy of that FFL on file, they'll gladly take your order, take your money, and ship the firearms to that FFL.
Now, it being Hawaii, the FFL will have to register the guns. Then you will have to acquire those guns from him (or her). For a longarm, no big whoop, just knock on his door with your permit in hand. For handguns, you will have to do the whole 2-week permit thing.
Now, one thing you can do to simplify the process, at least for certain guns, is get your own Type 3 FFL. This is called a "Curio and Relic" license or a "Collector's" license. It allows you to buy certain guns, mainly older ones, without the need for a 3rd party FFL. The 1903 you are looking at would be on the list of approved guns.
