"Like new" 1903 and 03a3
« on: November 23, 2009, 09:06:53 AM »
Sarco, an advertiser in my favorite gun rag, is advertising these beauties.  New GI barrels, most parts like new, new stocks (both scant and C available), and C&R eligible.  Prices start at $600.

My assumption is that they've rebuilt these guns on existing receivers.  Still, for a 1903 with mostly new parts, this is a helluva deal!  If I didn't have 2 already, I'd have placed the order last week.  As it is, I still may buy one... I know I want to!

Nice.

Do these shoot .30-06? How do they compare to M1 Garands?

I grabbed a few pics from Sarco's site. The first is their ad, the second is an example of what you get.

They do shoot .30-06.  Comparing them to the Garand is difficult.  Bolt action versus semi-auto.  The 1903 is waaaaay lighter, which can be good or bad depending n how recoil resistant you are.  Garand holds 8 shots (and is the only gun Kokohead rifle arange allows you to load more than 5 rounds at a time in!) while the 1903 holds 5.

I have both, and I regularly shoot each.  They both bring a smile to my face each time I pull the trigger!

What would be the process if I did buy a gun from a website or a mainland company?  Do I have to do some type of transfer?  Looking into a new gun. Here's my three choices, Ak, shotgun, or 1903.  A Kar98 or  Mousingat would be nice too.  I been seeing some compaines that end up with military surplus.  For example SAMCO and Mitchells Mausers. Have anyone delt with any on these companies?

When buying a gun from another state, they have to be shipped to a FFL (Federal Firearm License) dealer and they will perform an FFL transfer. I think that the person sending the package needs a copy of the FFL to send it out as well (but don't quote me on that), The price ranges, so you should call up a dealer from the gun shops list and find out their prices before hand. A lot of people recommend Al Mongeon at Ready on the Right. From what I hear, it's $25 plus tax.

I've bought from SAMCO, but not Mitchell's.  My SAMCO transaction was just fine.

To buy from a warehouse, or via an internet auction, at SOME point before they ship the gun, they need to see a copy of the actual license of the FFL to whom they are shipping it.  In internet auctions, that step usuallyhappens after you win the bid.  With warehouses, it usually happens before they take your credit card number.  It may well be the very first thing they ask for.

So, before you start, get in touch with your friendly neighborhood FFL (I strongly recommend Al at Ready on the RIght) and say "Hey, I want to buy a gun, can I have a copy of your FFL?"  Or alternately, "Hey, I want to buy a gun from SAMCO at this address, will you fax them a copy of your FFL on my behalf?"

Once SAMCO (or whoever) has a copy of that FFL on file, they'll gladly take your order, take your money, and ship the firearms to that FFL.

Now, it being Hawaii, the FFL will have to register the guns.  Then you will have to acquire those guns from him (or her).  For a longarm, no big whoop, just knock on his door with your permit in hand.  For handguns, you will have to do the whole 2-week permit thing.

Now, one thing you can do to simplify the process, at least for certain guns, is get your own Type 3 FFL.  This is called a "Curio and Relic" license or a "Collector's" license.  It allows you to buy certain guns, mainly older ones, without the need for a 3rd party FFL.  The 1903 you are looking at would be on the list of approved guns.

Mahalos for the info guys.  TomG how would I go about to get a  Type 3 FFL?

The article at SurplusRIfle is a good one, if a bit wordy.  Short version is:
1.  Go to the ATF website and get the proper forms.  They cannot be downloaded, you have to call or email and request them.  Look here.
2.  Fill out the paperwork, and return it, along with $30, to the ATF.
3.  Wait.
4.  Get a surprisingly large package in the mail.  Don't celebrate, it's just a copy of the laws.  Your license still isn't here.
5.  Ger license in the mail.  Make MANY, MANY copies.  DO NOT SIGN THE ORIGINAL!
6.  Send a copy to HPD.
7.  Start ordering guns!  The list of approved C&R guns is on the ATF website here.
8.  After 3 years, fill in the renewal forms.

Be aware that a C&R license is only for collectors.  There are only certain guns (a LONG, LONG list) you can buy, and you can not be in the habit of buying 20 guns then selling 19.  You are required to keep records.  But the inconvenience is minor, and the rewards are great!

Sounds like a plan!! Is there anyone in here as a Type 3FFL.

Had one for nearly 5 years now.  Used it several times.  There's nothing like the thrill of having a gun delivered straight to your door!
