I was wondering about this question myself. I guess the only thing that I can come up with is to hire an attorney and file motion to forfeit the registration to my state unclaiming my "residency" in Hawaii making the registration invalid; my state does not require registration so I will then file for a return of personal documents from legal holds that no longer hold stature. I do not plan on selling my fire arms nor do I care if the government knows what I have I just don't think that a state which I do not belong too should have any of my personal records because of which it becomes personal property of confidential concern.

I guess after I leave I will hire a lawyer. I am not coming back to this state to live and there is no reason they should ever have anything to do with me after I leave.  I will sell all of my stuff and rebuy it I guess Just to provide proof that I no longer possess it..

Ever.

I love this place but the nanny state is just to great for me. Between the car registration process and the firearm registration process it really ruins this state. They take video of your car now to register it.  Who makes this shit up?

Just remember that if you purchased from FFLs the 4473 forms are (theoretically anyway) retained for 20 years, and from the HPD permit process your biometrics and name are in IAFIS over at FBI. Federal govt loves biometric databases and good luck getting those removed (read: not happening).

IMO trying to get the permit expunged is pointless, but certainly you're entitled to try. If you do try please let us know what happens, I'd be curious.

Hawaiian law has no provision for unregistering a gun. This is nothing new. Michigan has no way to unregister a handgun either.

Hawaii's registration system is very antiquated and fortunately, it is not as efficient and standardize like it is in New York.

I have been thinking about moving to Hawaii when I retire many years down the road, or at least spend half of the year over there. So I have actually been thinking about registering all the guns I want to bring in one of the counties that I will not move to. That way when I move to one of the other counties, I have no legal obligation to register my guns there. And they will be harder to track because they would be tied to my out-of-state ID at an address that I no longer live at.

Or you could just register your guns in Kauai where of the old lady doesn't care if she gets your date of birth and social security number wrong… Which is no problem by my standards  :D
