Not sure why people are like that lol. I use water to rinse my gun after pouring cleaning solvent on it. With the exception of a wolf steel casing getting jammed today, never had a problem with my firearms.

Sadly, I'm currently learning about and dealing with rust issues myself. I think water can be damaging but it can also be fine depending exactly what you do. I shot my blued Sig P230 (not SL version) once, couple magazines only, and a tiny drizzle of rain fell on it. I wiped it off, put it back in the foam case, took it home, cleaned it thoroughly but didn't feel like oiling it, and the slide rusted up in spots exactly where the rain drizzled on it, one side only.

My guess is that a tiny bit of moisture got sucked up into the foam when I put the pistol in the case. So don't put a firearm that has been wet into a case, even if you've wiped it dry, unless you've let it sit outside for a few hours in dry weather to completely dry out. It probably also depends on the finish of the firearm. Blued or plain carbon steel is the easiest to rust I believe.

On the other hand, I recently purchased that crappy Birchwood Casey reblueing set to try to fix my once-badly-rusted katana (I only made it much worse). The instructions it comes with basically tell you to hose the firearm down with water after every step. So water can't exactly be a firearm destroyer, you just have to be careful what you do with it and make sure the water is totally dried off before storing the firearm.

Did it rain today? My wife wanted to go. Shux....I figure the best time to go is when it rains cause no one wants to get their firearms wet...and tables are vacant... ;)

It can be pretty neat to shoot when it's rainy and overcast..  You can get a pretty decent idea of how much flash you will get at night........without shooting at night.

I tried to reblue one of my AKs, I would let it sit for maybe 5min after watering it down and it would be covered in surface rust. I even tried to do it out in the sun and use a hair dryer to get the water off quickly.  I tried 3 or 4 times before giving up and just sprayed the gun.

It's probably not the water that caused the rust, but the Birchwood Casey cold blueing liquid or the rust and bluing remover liquid. Both of these are nasty chemicals that can cause discoloration or rust. From what I understand of blueing, there are different kinds of blueing but most are like a specific kind of rust. They make your gun rust quickly in a sense and leave the metal blue/black afterwards.

My katana turned grayish black over half the surface after it rusted from plant sap and I cleaned off the rust. So I guess my katana is evidence of organic blueing in action. Which is why I thought the Birchwood Casey blue and rust remover liquid might take off the grayish black stains, but instead it just made more grayish black stains all over the blade.

You probably needed to wash off your AK more quickly and more thoroughly with water to stop that rust. But I have my doubts as to how well that product can work. :P Maybe it will work if you are some kind of master at applying it, but it's a dangerous and cancerous product. I regret buying it. :P

I had a brand new sig 226 with citron finish show rust spots on the slide and 2 mags after only 2 weeks. I kept it in a pelican case with foam, I found out later that it was probably the foam holding moisture and wicking away oil from the gun. I never used the foam case again and the rust stopped.

Some of the rust that would show up quickly.

I wish I didnt do it, I would rather of kept the original finish it had.

Aren't AKs usually parkerized, not blued?

Sorry about your AK nktrnl. At least it still shoots?

It's an AK, of course it still shoots. I cleaned it up and sprayed it with dupli-color. Btw the pictures above were after the second or third attempt. As you can see I didn't even get a chance to get all the water off before the rust would start to show up.
Good question on the park, I was under the assumption that any coating could be stripped and recoated. For all I know I could of done the procedure wrong? But I would like to think I can follow basic instructions.  The original finish was real rough. I picked up two and they looked like they went through a war (they were military training rifles). I'm keeping the other in it's original condition.

Throw some desicant into the case with your stuff.

Don't store your firearms in foam cases.  The foam is a magnet for moisture.  It also gets pretty nasty if it deteriorates due to heat or sunlight.
