Uh-Oh, the humidity has begun to take its toll on my firearms. (Read 7959 times)

Been here since Aug. of last year.
Been too busy to pay much attention to them.

A couple of days ago an incident very close to us has me thinking of replacing the ammo I sold off before moving here, and getting the firearms functional.
So, I've begun to seek powder and primers and just took a first look at my guns.
The Redhawk is OK.
Its SS and holding up well.

The SKS is showing a very small amount of rust forming around a few fasteners.

My old H&R semi-auto .22 is beginning to take a beating.
Rust is forming on the surfaces of the barrel and receiver.
I haven't looked down the bore yet.

The rifles are in a case.
It does have a foam liner.
I've read somewhere that may be the cause of the deterioration.

How do I protect them from the humidity without doing a cosmoline archive?

I know this has been asked many times before.
I couldn't get the site's search function to work for me.

damprid, goldenrod, light oiling, rechargeable dehumidifiers.. some combination thereof.. take your pick.

Homemade dissacant packs are easy enough to make. You can buy a big bag of them from Benjamin Franklin, or the hardware store. My dad likes to use either cheesecloth or coffee filters and staple together little pouches that he throws in every case, can and drawer he has.

Google it.  ;) JK

I would use one of these reusable desiccant like this in the case.

For safes or larger areas these are pretty good

I'm also trying these rust inhibitors just in case. Hopefully these work.

Porous bags of uncooked rice works too.
Google it cause every question is a dumb question.

If you're gonna make your own silica gel packs, just use crystal kitty litter. It's the same thing and it's absurdly cheap. Giant bag from walmart will probably last forever.

I have Damprid in my safe.

Yes, that foam liners of the gun cases are terrible for corrosion considerations if you're not careful.  Most of my guns are pretty low maintenance corrosion wise (ARs, Glocks, HKs, etc).  My Rem 700 and the rings/base did start to show rust, but I caught it early and now I'm sure to wipe the gun down with some Ballistol before putting it away in the safe.

I don't have any standard blued guns or case hardened finish guns.  It is my understanding that you have to be REALLY careful with the finish of the case hardened guns.

go to the fishing stores they got it, its not sold in your local walmart, its specialized to more like fisherman because of the sea salt. I put it on all my fishing reels and guns. If it wasnt for corrosion X I would have to buy an AK47 and just dip it in used car oil, thats how reliable an ak is you can almost abuse it and it still shoots lol

I use CLP oil on my guns.  Does a good job and lasts a long time.

Inox is also a good rust inhibitor and used by fisherman to spray their reels. It is food grade and is lanolin based. Can be found in Ace Hardware stores.

If you have a safe, a dehumidifier rod is the way to go. Dessicant packs only work well if they are used in a sealed container (I use them in military ammo cans to great effect), otherwise they will just pull moisture out of the air that is constantly circulating into your safe or cabinet. I occasionally oil my firearms but with the dehumidifier rod I have no issues and I live in windward Oahu.
